" We're all
going back to Kogarah Jubilee Oval"
The past several
years have seen Kogarah Jubilee Oval go through
a period of neglect. In fact the past three
years has been a struggle to survive a famine inflicted
upon it by the absence of the men in red and white,
who
played and made it the St. George District's focal
point on a winter's weekend, bringing thousands
of spectators
to their regular seats or a patch of grass.
I am pleased to announce
the famine in the St. George District is coming
to an end with the launch of the Jubilee
Oval Community Appeal today.
I appeal to the people
of the St. George District, arguably the most successful
sporting district in the nation, and
to all those followers of the red and white, regardless
of their sport, here and overseas, to contribute
as your
financial circumstances allow and help rebuild Kogarah
Jubilee Oval. A rebuild that will provide the community
with a very unique sporting entertainment facility,
and witness the return of those enjoyable winter
weekends in
the heydays of the mighty red and whites.
The task of raising
$1.85 million dollars to finalise Stage One of the
reconstruction before the end of March 2003
is rather daunting, but not impossible, when you
are working for a sporting community with so much
pride and
tradition.
It is also pleasing
to acknowledge that soccer, school sport, Junior
Rugby League, NSW Police Rugby League,
and other sporting and corporate groups will enjoy
the new facilities when staging their respective
competitions
and events during the year, here at Kogarah Jubilee
Oval.
Our team will be
calling for support from national building supply
companies for products, the Media,
businesses from the St. George District, Sydney
CBD and Illawarra region, the community and, in
particular, the
legion of dedicated red and white supporters to
fund the project.
The community can
purchase any of the four merchandise items on offer;
Supporters T-Shirt and Polo Shirts, a
paver or a piece of granite with your family's names,
or business logo and name, etched on it that will
help build
the "Legends Walk". Any donation of $50
or more will receive a personalised certificate
with the profiles of the
six patrons of the Jubilee Oval Community Appeal
embossed in gold and autographed.
In addition there
will be special fundraising events, commencing this
weekend, Saturday 14 December, with the
appearance of the St. George Illawarra Dragons on
the main stage at the Hurstville Spirit Festival,
Forest Road
Hurstville, between 4.30pm and 5pm with an autograph
session afterwards. Prior to this, the Dragons will
be
hosted for lunch by the management of the Hill St.
Tavern at Hurstville.
Major fundraising
activities proposed include "The Old and New
Dragons Dinner" and the "Red and White
Day"
at Jubilee Oval. The first weekend of April 2003
will witness all of the supporters of the famous
red & whites
assemble together with the St. George District's
sporting legends and stars at Kogarah Jubilee Oval.
The Red
and White Gala Day will culminate with a twilight
concert to celebrate the return of the mighty Dragons
to the
playground for Saints and memories for millions.
