The
"Dragon `em back" to Kogarah campaign
has attracted the high-profile support of rock star
and Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof.
Geldof was guest of honour at a $500.00-a-plate
dinner at St.George Leagues Club last Wednesday,
which raised funds for the St.George Foundation
and the campaign to bring the St.George-Illawarra
Dragons back to Jubilee Oval.
Football club general manager Robert Stone showed
Geldof around Jubilee Oval and Robinson showed him
around the Leagues Club.
Geldof was presented with a Dragons' jersey. Leagues
Club general manager Danny Robinson said $10,000
of the proceeds of the dinner would go to the Foundation,
set up by St.George Bank to support children's charities.
Anything left once costs are covered would go to
the campaign, which is raising funds to improve
Jubilee Oval ready for a Dragons' return next season.
Meanwhile, Kogarah mayor Jim Taylor says an account
has been opened at St.George bank for Jubilee Oval
redevelopment fund donations*.
Deposits can be made to the account at any St.George
branch. The account name is Dragons at Kogarah,
number 126026450.
In his regular column in the Leader, Cr Taylor said
a sponsorship manager had also been engaged to organise
fundraising.
* The St.George Leader also reports that Hurstville
Council has deferred consideration for funding the
St.George-Illawarra rugby league team's return to
Kogarah Oval until next year's budget. Councillors
voted last Wednesday night to consider an allocation
of $50,000 in the context of the 2003-2004 budget,
due next March.
