MATCH SUMMARY:
We let in three 1st half tries and the 2nd half was only better inasmuch that we only let in one try. This was a match that every man and his bulldog had Saints winning in a canter. Saints kicking game was atrocious. The report makes Trent Barrett look like the villain but the fact is that all halfbacks are only look good when the forwards are working together and paving the way for link men. It was depressing to see our backs taking the ball up and getting belted by the Canterbury forwards while our forwards were on a coffee break. Sure, Lance Thompson and Craig Smith never stopped trying and there were moments of effort from some of the others but on the whole, Saints looked rudderless, without leadership and hopelessly out of touch with the basics of the game.
Saints were done to nil - how awful is that? This is a real low point for all of us here.
The only positives I can find are that Saints showed occasional enterprise and were probably unlucky not to score on at least one occasion. As for the 'Berries, they shouldn't get too carried away with this win - it was afterall against a team of orphans.
It's times like this that I remind myself  ' its only a game...'
The draw gets difficult forthe next 2 weeks  with Saints playing the Nth Eagles and Melbourne, away. I am of the opinion that Saints must be pretty dirty on themselves & are keen to restore some pride.
Best for Saints: 3-  Ainscough, 2- Hookey, 1- Mundine
Best forwards: Thompson, Smith, Treacy
As always, Saints to win!
-Willow
3rd minute

Mundine->Barrett who goes through big gap and runs 40m to the Canterbury line. He is pulled down by Rod Silva with still one tackle to go - Bulldogs are shot to bits. Unfortunately,  Barrett commits a double movement resulting in a penalty to Canterbury.
6th minute

Hughes of Canterbury scores try after S.Price charges down an attempted kick by Trent Barrett. Halligan converts. Score: Saints 0 - C'bury 6
8th minute

3rd tackle, 30m out from own line, Saints have a chance with overlap forming: Brown->Thompson->Bartrim->Hooper->Brown. A good raid of 50m eventually halted 30m out from C'Bury line.
9th minute

Ainscough and Hookey combine and almost create something 10m out from C'Bury line. C'Bury are enthusiastic in defence and intercept the ball by knocking back behind their own tryline. Silva picks it up. Unfortunately, Saints are flat-footed and do not react. Silva easily runs the ball back into the field of play. This small passage of play illustrates the enterprise of Saints in attack but they are somewhat dull in defence, while C'Bury are boring in attack but keen in defence.
10th minute

Saints 10m line: Mundine busts them out wide after a scrum. Classic backline movement and an endorsement for good scrum play. Mundine runs 50m before being stopped by C'Bury cover defence. Mundine is held down in tackle by Darren Smith who was lucky not be sin-binned. Saints get penalty. Mundine throws ball at Smith, Smith returns with a limp swing and Mundine lands a fist on Smith's jaw. The dust up is brief and penalty in favour of Saints stands.

56th minute

38m out from Saints' line: Brown ->Pearson ->Barrett ->Patten ->Treacy ->Mundine ->Blacklock but ball goes to ground! 20m out from C'Bury line. If Blacklock had got a clean look at the ball, we would have scored! It just isn't our night.

REFEREE & TOUCH JUDGES have been the sacred cows of football commentary for as long as anyone can remember. RL fans constantly jeer these necessary evils of the game. Commentators on the other hand will witness many bad calls before uttering some forgettable statement. This may be for fear of prosecution or it could be that we are suppose to let life go on and quietly turn a blind eye to these refereeing blunders and baffling decisions. The adjudicators on the field have often been spot-on. However, there are times when they are lacking in competence and some are just too plain lazy to do their job properly. At worse, some have been corrupt and history shows this to be case in this unspoken area of the game. The tally of blatant errors is not meant to be a witch-hunt on any particular referee. Afterall, most are good people who try hard to improve their skills. But they should not be above critical analysis.
This is a list of errors which most people would have seen, either watching the game on TV or live at the match.
REFEREE: Sean Hampstead
When
Description
Team advantaged by Ref error
17th Minute
45m out from Saints' line: Mundine is working his way through offside traffic. He passes to Blacklock, the ball comes off the arm of a C'Bury player, the ref calls it forward Canterbury
21st minute
Late tackle on Ricky Stuart by Andrew Hart after kick. Ref and touchies miss this. Saints
27th minute
C'Bury use offside play to pin Saints down in their own 10m area. This is a typical C'Bury ploy which has been part of their play since 1994. Ref should be on to this. Canterbury
43rd minute
Canterbury get penalty. StGeorge player ruled to strip ball but ref was wrong. Canterbury
45th minute
C'Bury blatantly offside 40m from Saints line. No action taken. Canterbury
51st minute
C'Bury player,  Willie Talau (#4)  head butts Jamie Ainscough, once and then twice while Ainscough is on his back. Lee Hookey protests, Ref is unsighted but Touch Judge had his beak in the action and had full view of the tackle. The crowd behind him certainly saw what was going on as well. Commentators gave themselves up here as they asked to have another look and then all reacted with stony silence. Perhaps they are under some sort of instruction to remain quiet when it comes to disgraceful and cowardly acts. (see TV capture pics) Canterbury
55th minute
Knock on against Saints is incorrect ruling. There was no knock on here. Canterbury
Total Referee or Touch Judge errors = 7
Errors in favour of Saints = 1
Errors in favour of Canterbury = 6
Penalty Count: Saints 4 - C'Bury 7
Comments: Despite Saints being disadvantaged by the penalty count and Ref error count, our overall feeling about Ref Hampstead is a good one. He made some errors but none were crucial in the match. The head butting incident by Willie Talau against Jamie Ainscough for all its shame was an incident that many missed., but we still maintain that the touchie was not doing his job on this occasion, so that means a point against the Ref. Our conclusion was that Lee Hookey had justification to start a dust up so as to bring attention to the pathetic antics of Willie Talau but that is a whole different issue.
Generally, the Ref did a fair job of holding the teams apart and we were impressed with his handling of the Mundine 'fight' in the 10th minute (a sin-bin of Darren Smith would have been better) and the head high report against Craig Smith in the 29th minute (it was good that he didn't send Smith off). He also seemed to be 'out of the way' as both teams had a go at playing footy.
Overall rating: 7 out of 10
