RESULTS: SAINTS 24 NEWCASTLE 20 MATCH REPORT: 1ST DIVISION RESULTS: SAINTS WIN IN 'GOLDEN' TIME Sydney Football Stadium, Saturday 22 September 2001: Dragons 1st Division team has defeated the Knights in 13 minutes and 20 seconds of extra time after the scores were locked up at 20-all at fulltime. Saints fought back from a 16-2 deficit to gain the lead but with 3 minutes to go, the Knights scored to put them in front 20-18. With 9 seconds remaining on the clock, St George hooker, Aaron Gorrell kicked a penalty goal and the match went into extra time. Under the new rules, if the scores are equal at fulltime, the match is decided by a 'golden' point in extra time. That is, the next team that scores is the winner. This is the first time that the rule was put to the test. As the clock 'went forward', both teams made several unsuccessful attempts at field goal until finally Reece Simmonds made a break and found Mark Simon in support. In the next play, winger Shane Laloata scored to give the Dragons victory 24-20. Minor premiers, Saints now advance to next weeks 1st Division Grand Final.
