SOTV PREVIEW:
Saints v Brisbane
Knock 'em out!
SFS, Sat 15th Sep 7.30pm: Well this it folks. Our chance to knock Brissie out of the 2001 competition.
After smashing the hoodoo with a 20-18 win in round 23 Saints have now the opportunity to go one better and remove the Broncos altogether. The winner will meet Parramatta next week with the winner of that match advancing to the Grand Final.
St George have named a 19 player squad with Lance Thompson and Amos Roberts being given every chance get fit for this sudden death match.
Field goal hero, Willie Peters who was recalled to last weeks match is also in the squad as an interchange player but it's likely that he will start at half back and Jason Hooper, who survived an on field report against Canterbury, should start at lock.
There are rumours going around that Kevin Walters may be back for the Broncos minus his broken face. First grade debutante, Michael Coorey has been given a run in place of Michael Ryan
Keep an eye on Nathan Blacklock as he takes on Wendell Sailor and Trent Barrett who is sure to put in another match winning performance.
This should be a great game with a number players who are capable of turning any game on it's head.
For the first time in memory, Brisbane have been declared underdogs to Saints by the punters. The Dragons would be unwise to take the wounded Broncos lightly and will have to play at the top their form if they want to win. We think the Dragons will come to play and we're predicting a major victory over a troubled Broncos outfit.
OUR TIP: Saints by 30

MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY):

SAINTS BOW OUT OF 2001 IN HIGH SCORING SEMI
SFS, Sat 15th Sep 7.30pm: In a match that saw 72 points scored, Saints have lost to Brisbane 44-28 and are now eliminated from the 2001 NRL competition. This is new record for points scored in semi final match.
A crowd of 19,259 were on hand to see Brisbane steam roll Saints early and race away to a 20-nil lead after just 15 minutes.
Saints did come back into contention and following a try to Jason Ryles in the 70th minute and they were only 8 points behind. But they were never able to make up the deficit and Wendell Sailor scored his 4th try of the match soonafter to seal victory for the defending premiers.
On a bright note, Nathan Blacklock scored his 27th try of the year breaking the old club record of 26 set by Tom Ryan in 1957
In lower grades, Dragons' Jersey Flegg team went down to Newcastle 28-16 and are also eliminated from the competition. The Dragons 1st Division team are minor premiers and are a good chance of going all the way this year. They are having the week off and will be playing in next weekend's round of matches.

REF REPORT:
Paul Simpkins made countless errors and was backed up an inept touch judge and video referee. The controversy began from the outset and after 17 minutes the penalty count favoured Brisbane 6-1. The ref chose to penalise Saints out of the early stages of the match rather than enforce a sin bin for being repeatedly being offside. However, when Saints saw a some ball, the offside penalties suddenly evaporated.
Other incidents of note:
In the 19th minute, the ref and touchie ruled a Saints scrum feed when clearly it was Saints who put the ball in touch.
In the 24th minute, Barrett scores but the ref incorrectly rules a knock on against McGregor.
In the 47th minute, Chris Walker drops his knees into McGregors head but is not put on report.
In the 49th minute, a fight breaks out between Sailor and Treacy. Sailor had been taunting a number of players and on this occasion, Treacy pushes Sailor in the face. Sailor reacts by throwing punches. The ref informs all that Sailor has to stop the sledging but penalises Treacy who never threw a punch. Extraordinary.
In the 54th minute, Blacklock scores a try which looks like double movement but vid ref Parnaby rules 'benefit of the doubt'. The juries' still out on this one. Parnaby is the same vid ref which allowed a try to be scored against Saints in round 25 despite a player catching the ball in an offside position. It was no surprise to hear that Parnaby has been dropped from next weeks matches.
In the 57th minute, Sailor scored a 'try' which should have been given further scrutiny. The grounding of the ball was suss enough but a Saints defender (Peters) was definitely taken out by a Brisbane support player (Kelly).
Simpkins, for all efforts, put in a poor show today.
Overall Rating: 2 out of 10.
