SOTV PREVIEW:
3rd Qualifying Final:
SAINTS v C'BURY
Sydney Showground Homebush
Saturday 8 September 2001 - 7.30pm
With Trent Barrett back in the side and Jim Hall back in his box (for the time being), Saints have an opportunity to stamp their authority on this semi-finals race. For 2nd time in 8 days, The Dragons will take on the Bulldogs.
The late mail is that Jamie Ainscough (rib injury, round 25) is out and he will be replaced on the wing by Matt Cooper who has been performing well. Mark Riddell makes a welcome return as does Colin Ward.
The Bulldogs outfit looks to be a bit bruised from last weeks win. Their website reports that Darren Britt is making a return to the side.
This is a sudden death match for Saints while Canterbury will survive either way.
This is going to be a torrid encounter and no place for the light hearted. Without a doubt, ref Simpkins will have his work cut out keeping Canterbury onside and keeping an eye out for the niggle. There'll be plenty of biffo and don't be surprised if there's a major dust up early in the match.
Those going should be aware that the NRL fixture will be preceded at 5.25pm by the First Division match between Saints and Penrith. The Dragons have qualified in the semis in all 3 grades.
The main match kicks off at 7.30 ... it's sure to be a ripper!

MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY):
Saints Win 23-22
HOOPER ON REPORT... ROBERTS INJURED
Sydney Showground Homebush
Saturday 8 September 2001 - 7.30pm
Saints have got home by just 1 point winning 23-22 over the Bulldogs. It was a match that at first seemed sloppy but both teams went up a level and it turned into a heart stopper.
In a match which saw the lead change four times, both sides turned on some tremendous semi final footy.

Trent Barrett was man of the match and in a close tussle, he was the difference between the the two teams.
With less than 10 minutes to go, Willie Peters popped a field goal and this gave Saints a 7 point buffer but the Bulldogs scored shortly after and this set up a grandstand finish.
In the end, Saints won a tough encounter with both sides handing out punishment.
For Saints, Jason Hooper has been placed on report for a head high high tackle
but he is not alone with another Canterbury player also being placed on report.
An injury concern hangs over Amos Roberts who had to leave the field in the 60th minute.
Nathan Blacklock scored his 26th try of the year equalling the St George record set by Tommy Ryan in 1957 but the turning point of the match happened in in the 66th minute when Trent Barrett ran at the line on the last tackle and delivered a tremendous pass to Matt Cooper who scored his 2nd try of the night.

Mention also must be given to Mark Riddell who landed two sideline conversions which contributed to Saints' victory tonight.

HALF TIME
42 min: Trindall head high on Fitzgerald (but not put on report). Saints take tap but are tackled into touch on 1st tackle. Errors happening from both sides.
50 min: Try Blacklock. Barrett -> McGregor -> Blacklock. Blacklock slips in the in-goal and it goes to vid ref to see if he touched the dead ball line but he's in by a country mile. Conversion from sideline. Another great kick from Riddell who throws arm into in celebration. Lead changes for a 4th time. Saints 18-14
52 min: Fitzgerald late tackle on Anasta, no penalty.
56 min: Penalty goal El Masri. Saints penalised for stripping. Looking close to being sin binned. Saints 18-16
60-63 min: Sherwin 40/20. Both teams have gone up another level. Roberts leaves the field injured and won't return. Saints under pressure. Big hits happening from both teams as match intensifies.
Blacklock, now at fullback, pulls off a great pick up to relieve the pressure.
66 min: Try Cooper. Brilliant pass from Barrett running on last. One handed whilst in mid air. Conversion attempt out wide from Bartrim misses. It's not over yet but this is the turning point. Saints 22-16
68 min: High tackle on Bailey. Talau on report.
71 min: Field goal Peters. Saints 23-16
75 min: Try G. Hughes. After getting ball back from kick off. Conversion El Masri. Saints 23-22
80 min: In the final seconds, C'bury launch a final attacking wave and Sherwin sets to shoot for field goal. Treacy comes up out of the line and stops the attempt. Sherwin steps and then sends a pass out wide to Hughes where there appears to be an overlap. Hooper jars Hughes with a heavy tackle and the final pass doesn't find it's mark. El Masri tries to pick up rolling ball but is thwarted by Peters' in cover. By now, more troops are on hand and Gasnier picks up loose ball and runs some 35m and looks a chance to go all the way before being ankle tapped. Full time siren and we're breathless.
FULL TIME: Saints 23 - C'bury 22

SOTV BEST PLAYERS:
Trent Barrett (3pts) TVs Man of of the match and out best player too. Trent came up against some excellent talent in Braith Anasta and won on a points decision. On two occasions, Barrett set up tries after running on the last tackle in heavy traffic. We know he is a great player and today he showed us again how great he is. After difficult week with the judiciary and eventually being exonerated, Barrett was everywhere and was the difference between the 2 teams in an extremely close match. Without him, Saints' season would now be over.
Mark Riddell (2pts) Kicked 2 goals from the sideline and was constantly in the thick of the action. His burst up the middle and setting up of the Amos Roberts try was classic stuff from the running hooker.
Jason Ryles (1pt) The pick of the workhorses although there were a few not too far away. Jason worked his guts out with some great displays of taking the ball to the opposition.

REF REPORT:
Paul Simpkins made numerous errors but to his credit, he always seems to keep his ego in check. Our main concern is that he lacks attention to detail. This sort of stuff has a tendancy of 'evening up the score' over a period of time but it could be that one day soon, Mr Simpkins' care free attitude will directly lead to deciding the outcome of an important match. We think we should be able to expect better from the game's #2 ref.
