PREVIEW:
ROUND 25 PREVIEW: SAINTS HAVE OPPORTUNITY FOR 5TH SPOT Trent Barrett Named as Captain Andrew Bobbin gets 1st grade debut Sydney Football Stadium, Sunday 26 August 2001: The Dragons will be relying on a win today against the Roosters and for the Raiders to get up against the Broncos in order to gain 5th spot on the ladder. However, the main objective must be to remain focussed on the game at hand where a win will see Saints definitely in the top 8. For the first time, Trent Barrett has been named captain of the Dragons after Lance Thompson pulled out through injury. Thompson was named captain after the suspension of Craig Smith. Barrett is Saints' 4th captain this year with Jamie Ainscough getting a (c) next to his name earlier in the season. 1st grade debutante, Andrew Bobbin comes into the team for Thompson and late mail is that Colin Ward might be pulling out with strong defender, Jamie Fitzgerald getting the call up. Nathan Blacklock needs just one more try to be the first player ever to score 25 tries or more for 2 years running. He needs just 2 more tries to equal the most tries scored in one season any St George player. That record of 26 tries being set by Tommy Ryan in 1957. The Roosters will be feeling motivated following the release during the week of a 'players poll' which had their captain Brad Fittler as the 'most over rated player' in the game. Also, Easts will be without utility back, Craig Wing. This is a desperate match for the Roosters who are in danger of slipping out of the top eight. The forward exchanges should worth keeping an eye on with Darren Treacy and ex -Saint, Craig Fitzgibbon being the stand out back rowers. Saints will be looking to the halves again and in particular Jason Hooper who has been in tremendous form in recent weeks. The last time these two teams met was in round 12 when the Roosters were considered lucky to come away with a 20-all draw. Our tip Saints by 14 |

RESULTS: SAINTS 12 (Blacklock, Treacy tries. Bartrim 2/2 goals) ROOSTERS 25 (Fittler, Flannery, Heggarty tries. Fitzgibbon 5/6, Milton 1/2 goals. Fittler field goal) (NB Goalkickers: Saints 2 conversion attempts; Easts 3 conversion attempts + 5 penalty goal attempts) CROWD 20, 117 MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY): SAINTS 12 beaten by ROOSTERS 25 Sydney Football Stadium, Sunday 26th August 2001: In a match that was overshadowed by thunderstorms, rain and hail, the Dragons played like a bunch of 2nd graders and the Roosters played just well enough to give their supporters some hope that they may just be there in the crunch matches which are to follow. Nathan Blacklock scored his 25th try of the year and is the only man in history to have done so 2 years running. The Easts forwards out-muscled Saints and paved the way for a well deserved win. Massive question marks have been placed over a number of ref decisions. In particular, a try awarded to the Roosters just before half time. A Fittler bomb ended up in the arms of Fletcher who was clearly offside. The incident was judged by the video ref but in this case, the vid ref got it wrong by a mile.... must have been looking at a different player. This try took the lead away from Saints. But the Dragons were their own worse enemy as they delivered possession to opposition and gave away no less than 3 penalties from kickoff. Both teams battled their way through but it was Saints who looked worse for wear and in the end, The Roosters came away with a much needed win. MATCH

REF REPORT: Bill Harrigan was back to his dismal worse again. Nit picking at every opportunity and guilty of countless errors.... large and small. From the moment he incorrectly disallowed Blacklock's try in the opening minutes, we knew we had a problem. His assisyant VideoRef Panaby made a shocking error just before halftime and that was it. Hiss inability to administer the rules when it mattered most and his obvious disregard for the players' well being makes it impossible to give Bill any points at all. Details are outlined in the match report (by the clock) and amongst the pics. All in all it was a woeful effort. Overall rating: 0 out of 10
