PREVIEW:
SAINTS v NQ IN TOWNSVILLE WILLIE PETERS IS BACK Dairy Farmers Stadium, Saturday 21 July 2001: Dragons half back, Willie Peters is set to make a return from injury following reports that Keiran Kerr has been unable to overcome a hamstring injury he suffered in the round 18 Canberra match. The last time these 2 teams met in Townsville was in round 13 in 2000 when Saints were annihilated to the tune of 50-4. Since then, Saints have given some back with a big win earlier this year in round 7 when the Dragons ran all over the Cowboys at WIN Stadium, clocking up a 48-12 victory. NQ have put Nathan Fein on the bench and Willie Peters will be initially lining up against a young Chris Sheppard. Many Dragons supporters will be keeping an eye on Willie Peters who would have almost certainly been in 1st division this week if not for Keiran Kerr's injury. Referee Shayne Hayne is new to 1st grade this year and is an unknown factor to most Saints fans. It's hoped that he is up to the task at hand. The Cowboys have had a troubled year with the loss of their coach and the much reported bail out from News Ltd. But it's going to be a tough encounter at Dairy Farmers this weekend and the Dragons will have to come into town with the right attitude. Our Tip: Saints by 20 |

MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY): COMMITTED COWBOYS CRUSH WOEFUL DRAGONS Full Time: NQ 34 - Saints 10 Tingha scores in his 100th game Dairy Farmers Stadium, Saturday 21 July 2001:
Townsville is turning into something of a graveyard for Saints who were thrashed at the same venue 50-4 in season 2000. A small consolation is that Saints will be able to cling onto 7th position by virtue of the fact that both Melbourne and the Eagles have also suffered losses this weekend. MATCH
REPORT (BY THE CLOCK):
SOTV BEST PLAYERS: Jamie Ainscough (3pts) Try scorer. Backed up. Gained more yardage then any of his forwards. Mark Riddell (2pts) Tried hard from dummy half. The only forward worth his crust tonight. Nathan Blacklock (1pt) Scored try #92 in his 100th game. Often came infield and tried to get things going. REF REPORT: Shayne Hayne has been seen around the traps doing some touch judge work. He was touch judge in the Saints v Eagles game just last week and stuffed up a call in that match. He is a very ordinary and often 2nd rate ref. One could be excused for thinking that it was no mistake that he was given a match in FNQ...the TV replay being programmed for broadcast late on a Saturday night. Hayne gave 5 penalties, all to the Cowboys, in the opening 20 minutes. In fact, Saints didn't get a penalty until the 30th minute. In the 20th minute he deemed that an accidental head ball from a NQ player was a knock on. Two minutes later he let NQ go with a forward pass. Saints first try to Ainscough came off a forward pass. In the 2nd half, the touchie incorrectly ruled that Gasnier had gone into touch. Despite this error, Saints won the ball against the feed but the ref, being rather surprised at this rare event asked for it to fed again. Saints got their 2nd penalty of the match in the 45th minute. Hayne also incorrectly ruled a knock against Saints in the 54th minute. All in all, Shayne Hayne fumbled and bumble his way through this match and often provided us with comic relief in what was an otherwise a dismal night. Errors: Too many to count. Penalties: Cowboys 7-5 Overall rating: 1 out of 10.
