SOTV PREVIEW:
Brookvale, Saturday 14 July 2001: Saints have an ordinary record at Brookvale and who can forget the infamous 61-0 thrashing we copped in 1994?
Both teams come into this match with players missing and both are coming off  big wins. Canberra thrashed Easts 40-12 while Saints slaughtered Canberra 44-12.
Saints are without Darren Treacy and Willie Peters while the Eagles have to do without NSW forward, Mark O'Meley who is under suspension. Additionally, Saints have to contend with Trent Barrett and Craig Smith both backing up from Friday night's Aust v NZ Test match with Nathan Blacklock also having to make the flight as a reserve.
The biggest danger for the Dragons will come from Adam Muir and Brett Kimmorley who have been overlooked for Test duties and also Steven Menzies who ALWAYS puts in a top match against the Dragons.
All Saints eyes will be on Keiran Kerr* who faces his toughest 1st grade match yet, taking on international half back, Kimmorley.
Most punters have Saints as outsiders for this match and given the facts, it's easy to see why. However, there's a few of us who expect Jason Ryles to lift to new heights this Saturday and we expect a man of the match performance from an even more confident Nathan Blacklock who has at last been recognised by the selectors.
The last match: Saints won 48-18 in round 6.
Referee: Paul Simpkins has refereed 3 Saints matches in 2001 including the round 6 match v the Eagles. This year we have won 2 and drawn 1. In 2000, we had him for 2 matches with one loss and 1 win.
Overall (2000 & 2001): 5 matches, 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss.
Head to head: 3 matches, Eagles 2, Saints 1.
OUR TIP: Saints by 13

*Kerr out and replaced by Hornby

RESULTS:
SAINTS 28 (Roberts Blacklock, Hooper, Barrett, Hart tries. Bartrim 2/3, Riddell 2/2)
NORTHERN EAGLES 18 (Beckett, Walker tries. Walker 5/5 goals)
Ref: P. Simpkins, Penalties: Eagles 11-5
Crowd: 7017

(see sound file below for more)
Brookvale Oval, Sat 14 July 2001: The Dragons have scored a hard fought victory over the Northern Eagles in an aggressive encounter at Brookvale Oval. In one of the season's toughest matches, Saints out-muscled a determined Eagles outfit who led 8-nil after just 15 minutes. At half time it was 10-all.
In a match full of excellent forward exchanges, Saints finally got the upper hand with a match winning try to Andrew Hart in the 76th minute. Saints winning by 28-18 (5 tries to 2).
Try scorers for Saints were Roberts, Hooper, Barrett , Blacklock and Hart. Barrett and Smith were magnificent backing up from yesterday's Test match and at full time both were absolutely wasted.
Unfortunately, Barrett has been placed on report for 'tackling too hard' and has to face the nonsense of the NRL judiciary on Monday night.
Additionally, Wayne Bartrim was placed on report for a similar incident and Craig Smith has an anxious wait after being penalised for a head high tackle. On replay, all 3 incidents look OK for the players but you never know with this current judiciary whose reputation is at best, 'inconsistent'.
poste script: All 3 players were not made to front the judiciary

MATCH REPORT (BY THE CLOCK):
3 min: Penalty goal Walker. Penalty against Smith for a head high. Replay shows it was not high. Eagles 2-0
8 min: Hornby appears to playing in the backline at five eighth with Barrett at halfback.
The ref is penalising Saints and handing out cautions but it is Eagles' front rower, Paul Stringer who shows his frustration and punches Lance Thompson while he is on the ground. Tensions threaten to explode into an all in dust up. I blame for Toovey for this. He was leading the niggle count early in the match and it was no surprised to see him carry on even more after his team mate was penalised for being a fellow rat bag.
11 min: Barrett heavy tackle on Menzies.
15 min: Try Beckett. A loose pass from Barrett is intercepted by Lennis Beckett who shows a clean pair of heals to run 95m to score. Conversion Walker. Eagles 8-0
18 min: Try Roberts. The Brookvale crowd goes deadly silent! Blacklock from 40m out, setups Gasnier who in turn sets ups Roberts with a beaut flick pass which is well taken by Amos. Conversion attempt from Wayne Bartrim misses. Eagles 8-4
27 min: Penalty goal Walker. Hookey offside. Blacklock was unsuccessful in fielding awkward grubber kick. Hookey fell on ball in offside position having no choice but to concede penalty to save the try. Eagles looking good with the ball and controlling the ruck area with quick play the balls. Eagles 10-4
30 min: Kimmorley kicks the ball and it hits the ref giving the Eagles a scrum feed some 20 metres downfield.
32 min: Blacklock try. Just when the Eagles looked set to score, Tingha pulls off a trade mark intercept and runs 90 metres to score under the sticks. Conversion Riddell. Score 10-all
37 min: Eagles with every chance to score following back to back penalties against gasnier and another for back chatting. Saints defend well.
39 min: Walker attempts field goal without success. At half time, Saints have scored 2 rties to 1 and despite playing some bright football and having plenty of ball (57%), the Eagles team leave the field full of the knowledge that they have only managed to be on level pegging on the score board.
HALF TIME: 10-all
40 min: Matt Cooper  makes a return to 1st grade for the first time since season 2000. He comes off the bench to replace Lee Hookey who copped a knock in the first half and is unable to continue because of blurred vision.
43 min: Ainscough passes ball into touch.
45 min: Saints are penalised and Barrett is placed on report for being involved in a heavy tackle on Menzies (the matter went no further). Saints go further on the back foot after another Ainscough error.
46 min: Penalty goal Walker. The ref has gone whistle blowing mad and by the 50th minute the Eagles lead the penalty count 9-4. Eagles 12-10
50 min: Try Hooper. On the last tackle, Blacklock does a little jig at dummy half and the Eagles defence holds off just long enough for Nathan to put Hooper through a gap to score. Conversion Riddell. Saints 16-12
52 min: Saints take the ball some 70 metres and almost score but are penalised again and the Eagles respond well applying more pressure. The Dragons forwards defend well and when Saints get the ball back a few minutes later, it is the backs who do all the hit ups in the next set of six.
60 min: Following a series of terrible kicking options from the Eagles' Brett Kimmorley, Saints are penalised again for tackling too hard and it is Bartrim who is placed on report for lifting the ball carrier, Menzies. As with Barrett, Bartrim never had to face the judiciary.
63 min: Eagles almost score in corner but Miles puts foot on touch line.
66 min: Try Barrett. After being knocked flat on his back by a Toovey tackle. Barrett gets straight back and receives the ball flat footed. he then accelerates towards the line, stands up Muir and fends his way over. Conversion Bartrim. Saints 22-12
70 min: A good low and hard kick from Kimmorley is plucked out by Amos Roberts who saves the try.
71 min: Try Walker. Toovey bust from halfway to Muir who finds Walker. Conversion Walker. Saints 22-18
76 min: Try Hart. 9 metres out from the line, Andrew Hart shows good strength and determination to crash over and score the match winning try. Conversion Bartrim. Saints 28-18
This was perhaps one of the toughest matches of the year and a very good indication that Saints are now showing that they can muscle up when required. The win puts Saints in 7th position but with 7 more rounds of the competion to go, they still no way safely in the semi finals.
FULL TIME: Saints 28-18

REF REPORT:
Paul Simpkins
It's hard to tell what makes a ref go whistle blowing mad at some things and yet ignore other things.
Paul Simpkins had a pretty ordinary match but he may have been overawed the toughness of the encounter.
He made a number of errors including missing offside play. He missed at least 2 knock ons when he was unsighted but it was the non knock-on which went against the Eagles (10th min) which caught our eye early on.
In the 30th minute, he got in the way of an Eagles kick which saw the home team get a scrum feed many yards downfield. This was just fundamentally bad refereeing as Simpkins should be able avoid a kick from that range. Better ref anticipation of the general play would have seen a fairer result from the kick. In fact, a minute or two later, the Eagles came within a whisker of scoring. Simpkins can thank a Blacklock intercept for not only saving the try but saving the ref from further scrutiny.
The touch judges and ref also missed a number of late tackles and high shots. Both sides were guilty of this but we have trouble working out why Karl Lovell wasn't penalised for a forearm to the chin of Barrett in the 57th minute. Especially considering the scrutiny given to certain Dragons players for similar yet lesser offences.
However, our biggest bug bear with Simpkins is his interpretation of what is a dangerous tackle. Both Barrett and Bartrim were placed on report for 'raising the ball carrier above the horizontal'. Both players were not required to front the judiciary on these charges and were completely exonerated.
In our opinion, these were just good hard tackles and it was obvious from the outset that both sides were putting plenty into their defence. The referee should take note of Trent Barrett's post match comments where he describes footy as a hard game. A fact which we thought should already be apparent to the bloke in the middle (see sound file above).
Penalty count: Eagles 11-5
Ref, touchie and TV ref errors: 14
Errors favouring Saints: 5
Errors favouring Eagles: 9
Overall Ref Rating: 3 out of 10
