PREVIEW:
Brookvale, Saturday 14 July 2001: Saints have an ordinary record at Brookvale and who can forget the infamous 61-0 thrashing we copped in 1994? Both teams come into this match with players missing and both are coming off big wins. Canberra thrashed Easts 40-12 while Saints slaughtered Canberra 44-12. Saints are without Darren Treacy and Willie Peters while the Eagles have to do without NSW forward, Mark O'Meley who is under suspension. Additionally, Saints have to contend with Trent Barrett and Craig Smith both backing up from Friday night's Aust v NZ Test match with Nathan Blacklock also having to make the flight as a reserve. The biggest danger for the Dragons will come from Adam Muir and Brett Kimmorley who have been overlooked for Test duties and also Steven Menzies who ALWAYS puts in a top match against the Dragons. All Saints eyes will be on Keiran Kerr* who faces his toughest 1st grade match yet, taking on international half back, Kimmorley. Most punters have Saints as outsiders for this match and given the facts, it's easy to see why. However, there's a few of us who expect Jason Ryles to lift to new heights this Saturday and we expect a man of the match performance from an even more confident Nathan Blacklock who has at last been recognised by the selectors. The last match: Saints won 48-18 in round 6. Referee: Paul Simpkins has refereed 3 Saints matches in 2001 including the round 6 match v the Eagles. This year we have won 2 and drawn 1. In 2000, we had him for 2 matches with one loss and 1 win. Overall (2000 & 2001): 5 matches, 3 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss. Head to head: 3 matches, Eagles 2, Saints 1. OUR TIP: Saints by 13 *Kerr out and replaced by Hornby |

REF REPORT: Paul Simpkins It's hard to tell what makes a ref go whistle blowing mad at some things and yet ignore other things. Paul Simpkins had a pretty ordinary match but he may have been overawed the toughness of the encounter. He made a number of errors including missing offside play. He missed at least 2 knock ons when he was unsighted but it was the non knock-on which went against the Eagles (10th min) which caught our eye early on. In the 30th minute, he got in the way of an Eagles kick which saw the home team get a scrum feed many yards downfield. This was just fundamentally bad refereeing as Simpkins should be able avoid a kick from that range. Better ref anticipation of the general play would have seen a fairer result from the kick. In fact, a minute or two later, the Eagles came within a whisker of scoring. Simpkins can thank a Blacklock intercept for not only saving the try but saving the ref from further scrutiny. The touch judges and ref also missed a number of late tackles and high shots. Both sides were guilty of this but we have trouble working out why Karl Lovell wasn't penalised for a forearm to the chin of Barrett in the 57th minute. Especially considering the scrutiny given to certain Dragons players for similar yet lesser offences. However, our biggest bug bear with Simpkins is his interpretation of what is a dangerous tackle. Both Barrett and Bartrim were placed on report for 'raising the ball carrier above the horizontal'. Both players were not required to front the judiciary on these charges and were completely exonerated. In our opinion, these were just good hard tackles and it was obvious from the outset that both sides were putting plenty into their defence. The referee should take note of Trent Barrett's post match comments where he describes footy as a hard game. A fact which we thought should already be apparent to the bloke in the middle (see sound file above). Penalty count: Eagles 11-5 Ref, touchie and TV ref errors: 14 Errors favouring Saints: 5 Errors favouring Eagles: 9 Overall Ref Rating: 3 out of 10
