SOTV PREVIEW:
RUGBY LEAGUE'S 10,000th GAME
BARRETT STILL IN DOUBT
Paul McGregor's 150th game
WIN Stadium, Saturday 7 July 2001: Saturday night's match will hold a special place in Australian League history when it becomes the 10,000th game to be played since the 1st grade 'comp'  kicked off in 1908.
It's not the first time that the Dragons have been present at League's special events. Rugby League under lights, drawn Grand Finals, matches interstate and venue launches often seem to have the red vee being honoured as Rugby League's first team.
But once the ceremonies are done with, Saints have to get down to the serious business of overcoming a desperate Raiders team. Despite having some star players missing, Canberra will make the going tough for Saints who are boasting a near full strength side.
Last week, it was announced that Canberra will be without Jason Croker, Mark McLinden and Ken Nagas. This week, Nagas is back but the final team has yet to settle. Saints are without Willie Peters (shoulder injury) but his position is well filled by Keiran Kerr who showed plenty of class against the Warriors last round.
Latest news (at time of writing) is that we may be without Trent Barrett who is still struggling to recover from the same calf injury which saw him miss last Sunday's Origin match. His availabilty is subject to a fitness test.
The big news is the return of Craig Smith who returns after six weeks suspension. Smith's recent announcement that he will not be with Saints in 2002 didn't stop coach Andrew Farrar rushing the star prop back into the top side.
Congratulations to Paul McGregor on his 150th game. It's also worth noting that this is the first game of the premiership since South Sydney won their court case to be re-admitted back into the League.
Unfortunately, we have for some reason inherited Bill Harrigan as ref again  for the 5th time this season. We can expect the usual caning from Bill who must be seething after copping criticism in last Sunday's Origin encounter. In 4 matches this year, we have lost 3 and won 1 under Bill. This equals the 2000 record where we only had the pleasure of Bill's company 4 times in the entire season.
One can only wonder the reasons why we have to endure this menace so many times in one year. This round's 'top match' is Newcastle v Brisbane and one expected Bill to be at Marathon Stadium. Some say he has been given this match because of it's status as #10,000. Who knows? All I know is we drew the short straw in the ref raffle.
In any case, Saints will just have to perform above expectations and it's unlikely that Bill can rain on the match. The real dampener on proceedings is likely to come from the skies with an early weather forecast that predicts wind, rain and cold. Good footy weather!

MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY):
ROUND 18 RESULTS
SAINTS 44 SLAUGHTER
CANBERRA 12
WIN Stadium, Saturday 7 July 2001:
In Rugby League's 10,000th game, the Dragons have wasted the Raiders by 8 tries to 2. Canberra's 2001 hopes
evaporated in the 1st 20 minutes and at half time Saints held an unbeatable 34-0 lead. In such an awesome display, it's difficult to find stand out players.
For Saints, Jason Hooper scored 2 tries as did Jamie Ainscough. For a change, Nathan Blacklock did not score but saved at least two tries.
Barrett sparkled, Riddell razzled and Gasnier dazzled.
The most pleasing aspect of the match was Saints' defence close to the line. When called upon, they defended with valour, often driving the ball carriers back upfield in situations that have seen tries conceded in weeks gone by.
Canberra showed some determination to come back in the 2nd half but the the night and the occasion belonged to the Dragons who now find themselves on 18 points and firmly in the top 8.

22 min: Try Ainscough. Intercept from 45m out brought about by good pressure in defence. Conversion Riddell. Saints 24-0
28 min: Try Ainscough. Down the right flank, the outside backs do a bit of old time passing football to wrong foot the lone fullback who did his best in a two-on-one situation. Conversion unsuccessful Riddell. Saints 28-0
29 min: Great defence on Saints' line. Amos Roberts fields ball and puts on a marvellous return.
30 min: Try Hooper. Barrett kicks, Schifcofske fumbles. All this after a Hooper made the initial break. Conversion Riddell. Saints 34-0
HALF TIME
41 min: Great defence after Canberra get back to back penalties. Ref Harrigan making his intentions clear for the 2nd half.
44 min: Try Gasnier. Blacklock unselfishly gives ball to 19 yr old Gasnier after Saints ran it on the last tackle from 45m out. Blacklock skirted down the sideline & came within a whisker of touch. Conversion Bartrim. Saints 40-0
48 min: Try Hookey. Barrett shifted play and sent wide pass to Hookey who scored out wide. Conversion unsuccessful Bartrim. Saints 44-0
59 min: Try Finch. Canberra finally get on the board after sustained pressure on the Saints' line. Conversion Schifcofske. Saints 44-6
64 min: Keiran Kerr comes off with a possible hamstring injury.
65 min: Saints drive Canberra back to the 30m line on the last tackle after defending their own line.
66 min: Blacklock, at fullback,  pulls off a miraculous copy book tackle close to the line saves a definite try.
72 min: Canberra recieving a number of penalties now (8-4) and Blacklock again pulls off a try saving tackle.
74 min: McGregor passes into touch for the 2nd time and despite a strong game, Paul McGregor has often died with the ball or killed the attacking momentum.
79 min: Nathan Blacklock puts his body on the line and saves a another try...for the 3rd time in the 2nd half.
80 min: Try Finch. Conversion Schifcofske. Saints 44-12 (8 tries to 2).

MATCH & CROWD PICS:

Kerr
Keiran Kerr scores Saints' opening try.

Hooper
Jason Hooper scores.

Treacy
Darren Treacy bursts up the middle.
He left the field soonafter with a torn achilles tendon

Treacy

Ainscough
Jamie Ainscough gets an intercept and scores

Amos Roberts
Amos Roberts clears the line

Mathew Elliott
Matthew Elliott, Canberra assistant coach
and next year's head coach sits alone at half time.

Ainscough and Martin
..the teams come back for the 2nd half.
Jamie Ainscough practices the age old custom of sledging as Canberra's Terry Martin fails to see the funny side of the joke.

overlap
Early in the 2nd half, Saints have a huge backline
set and an overlap appears.

Blacklock
Tingha comes within millimetres of touch.

Gasnier
Mark Gasnier takes the final pass before scoring.

crowd at 40-0
Smiles all round as Saints go further ahead.

Blacklock in cover
In the 66th minute, Canberra make a break down the left side. Wolfgramm (#2), looks certain to score.
Nathan Blacklock, who has switched to fullback is seen coming across just outside of his own 10 metre line, but it appears that he'll have too much ground to cover.

Blacklock covering tackle
Tingha does get there and
pulls off an incredible covering
tackle just short of the try line.
Definitely one from the text book.

REF REPORT:
It was a strange match for Bill. In the first half he seemed determined to behave himself and adhere to 10,000th game honour which he had obviously wrangled for himself.
In the 2nd half however, he soon slipped into old ways and on more than one ocassion was heard asking for clarification on certain issues.
The worrying comment "Thanks mate, I didn't see that" was further testimony to Bill's failing eyes.
Overall rating: 3 out of 10.
