SOTV PREVIEW:
KEIRAN KERR GETS HIS CHANCE
WIN Stadium, Sunday June 24 2001: The last time Saints and the Warriors played at WIN Stadium was on May 6, 2000 when the Dragons handed out a 50-4 thrashing. The Warriors gave a bit back on March 9, 2001 when the red and whites were sent packing from Ericsson after copping a 34-6 hiding. Saints have made some changes with  back rower, Andrew Hart being dropped* following a poor showing last weekend. Also missing will be half back, Willie Peters through  injury.
Coming into the run on side is Wayne Bartrim and for the first time we get the chance to see 1st division 1/2, Keiran Kerr try his luck in 1st grade.
Kerr comes up against Stacey Jones who poses a definite threat to the Dragons who are desperate to get back into the winners circle following last week's disappointing loss.
Ref Tim Mander has been in control of 1 Saints match in 2001and  6 Saints matches in 2000. Last 7 matches with Mander: we have 3 wins, 4 losses.
Last 6 matches: Saints LDWDWL; Warriors LWLLWW
Teams and other info, see above.
Our Tip: Saints by 8
* Hart back in, Leikvoll out.

MATCH REPORT (SUMMARY):
DRAGONS 38 defeat WARRIORS 18
BARRETT INJURY WORRY
WIN Stadium, Sunday June 24 2001: The Dragons have come away with a win despite some less than impressive defence close to their line.
The win was soured with a what looked to be a calf injury to NSW rep, Trent Barrett in the 1st half which saw him
unable to continue. Barrett has already missed games this year because of a similar injury. Saints conceded early points and after 20 minutes found themselves behind 12-2. Things turned around with a try to debutante Keiran Kerr in the 24th min after some fine lead up work from Mark Gasnier. It was a fine start to first grade for the stand in half back who backed up well in the first half and showed plenty of promise. This saw a resurgence from the Dragons and at half time they led 20-12.
The Warriors scored again early in the 2nd half and looked set to score again in the 51st minute but a timely 100 metre intercept try to Nathan Blacklock put Saints back in control.
Kieran Kerr, SOTV 24/6/01 Keiran Kerr
Tingha scored a double today and his tally for the year has now surged to 20 tries, well ahead of his nearest rival. This is a new record as no 1st grade player has ever scored 20 tries or more for 4 years running.
Saints were scrappy at times and looked lost without Barrett but did enough to put away an ordinary NZ team.
Crowd at WIN, SOTV 24/6/01 Barrett's injury aside, Saints also came off 2nd best with a number of cheap head high shots being levelled at a number of players. Blacklock copped a high shot as he stepped around the defence to score his first. Mark Gasnier was knocked out and unable to continue as a result of a deliberate head high from Jerry Seu Seu who also head slammed Colin Ward late in the match. Seu Seu is on report for the Gasnier incident and should end up on the sideline for some weeks.
The crowd took some heart from the result and was there at the end to cheer the head bandaged Nathan Blacklock from the field.
The win elevates Saints back into the top eight and keeps
us in touch with the other semi final hopefuls. However, on just 16 points, Saints are barely hanging onto 7th spot with a number of teams breathing down their neck.
MATCH REPORT (BY THE CLOCK):
kickoff: Blacklock starts at fullback with Roberts on the wing. Later in the match, they switch back to their usual positions.
6 min: Try Guttenbeil. NZ score close range try after 2 early penalties. Saints defence poor. Conversion Cleary. NZ 6-nil
10 min: Saints miss a couple of scoring opportunities. Extra possession but unable to crack the defence. Ryles makes a bust and the tricky pass to Hooper goes to ground. The goal line was open.
12 min: Betham punches Ryles in what looks like a a brain explosion. No reaction from Ryles and Saints get a penalty. Monty Betham is gaining a reputation as a player who lashes out for no reason and the reasons for his conduct are subject for debate.
14 min: Penalty goal Bartrim. NZ 6-2
15 min: Kickoff from Cleary finds dead ball line and Saints forced into drop out.
16 min: Another half break.
17 min: Blacklock disallowed a try after vid ref rules knock on and not forward pass. Video Refs are not allowed to rule on forward passes anymore but can rule
Nathan Blacklock SOTV 24/6/01 TINGHA - HISTORY MAKER
on balls going forward (!). The Hooper pass to Blacklock was deemed as a knock on. Is this a loophole in the vid ref forward pass rule? the ruling from the vid ref was swift and our replay shows an error here.
19 min: Another try to Tingha is goes begging when Colin Ward knocks on with Blacklock unmarked.
20 min: Try Jones. Clever work from the NZ halfback who could see Saints defence standing flat footed close to their own tryline. No one touched him even though he ran past several defenders. Conversion Cleary. NZ 12-2
24 min: Try Kerr. Gasnier breaks into the clear and Keiran Kerr backs up to score his first try in his debut 1st grade match. NZ 12-8
29 min: Blacklock unable to get to loose ball with tryline in front.
31 min: Try Roberts. Movement starts 20 metres out: Thompson -> Barrett -> McGregor (flick pass pass inside) -> Amos Roberts (from the wing) scores and in some hair raising stuff as he takes on the defence behind the tryline to improve his position. Conversion Riddell. Saints 14-12
34 min: Try Blacklock. #19 for season 2001. Riddell flicks ball to with out looking to Blacklock who scores under the posts. While scoring, Tingha cops a head high from Cleary and has to bandaged up. Conversion Riddell. Saints 20-12
34-35 min: Barrett leaves the fieled with injured calf muscle and will not return.
37 min: NZ players on a roll and make big in-roads up the centre. They bust the line but Amos Roberts at last line of defence pulls off a tackle which also sees him steal the ball 1 on 1.
Saints finish the stronger as the first half ends
HALF TIME
kickoff: Saints running into slight breeze.
43 min: NZ kick a 40/20.
44 min: Try Tony. From scrum and at close range. Conversion Cleary. Saints 20-18
51 min: Try Blacklock. Sporting a head bandage, Nathan Blacklock runs the best part of 100 metres to score. Moments earlier, NZ had an overlap and looked set to score but Tingha pulled off an intercept and from then on it was a case of shut the gate. This was Tingha's 20th try for 2001 and history making inasmuch that no other player has ever scored 20 tries or more for 4 seasons in a row. Not only did Tingha save a try but he scored and this should be regraded as the turning point of the match. Conversion Riddell. Saints 26-18
56 min: Amos Roberts makes a great return run of some 40 metres and is held down in the tackle by a desperate NZ defence as he tries to play the ball. NZ are penalised and Saints are denied a try scoring chance. There was sin bin used even though it would have been appropiate. Penalty goal attempt from Riddell is unsuccessful.
58 - 60 min: Penalty goal Riddell. Blacklock comes within a whisker of scoring following in-goal grubber. Line drop out from Cleary goes out on the full. Saints 28-18
63 min: Hooper crosses to 'score' but is penalised for double movement.
64 min: Gasnier is knocked out cold by Seu Seu who came in with a deliberate swinging forearm to the side of the head. Seu Seu is placed on report and will be later suspended for one week in what can only be deemed as a lenient sentence considering Seu Seu's already tarnished record. The infringment itself was brought to the refs attention by a touch judge and play had developed downfield with Saints on the attack. The 'penalty' took Saints 30 metres back and Gasnier took no further part in the match but Seu Seu remained on the field.
72 min: Try McGregor. Bartrim gets in behind the defence on the last tackle and finds McGregor in support. Conversion Bartrim. Saints 34-18
76 min: Seu Seu, not happy with already being on report, head slams Ward who is momentarily knocked out but has to remain on the field as the interchange is now exhausted. Ward most likely won't remember the last few minutes and it's confusing as to why Seu Seu would undertake such an action late in a lost match. Interestingly no action was taken on the field and it also escaped the notice of the Match Review Commitee.
79 min: Try McGregor. Amos Roberts grabs an intercept close to the NZ line and the ball goes to ground. McGregor picks it up to score out wide. The vid ref is called and replays show that the ball, which initially appeared to be knocked on by Amos did in fact come off the NZ tackler and it was play on. Conversion attempt from Bartrim misses. Saints 38-18
80 min FULL TIME: ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 38 DEFEAT NZ WARRIORS 18
Tingha is cheered of the field.

SOTV BEST PLAYERS:
Jason Ryles (3pts) Led the pack with some pwer house running and uncompromising defence. Maturing as a player.
Nathan Blacklock (2pts) With a little luck, Tingha could have scored 5 tries. Created a new record today.
Colin Ward (1pt) The oldest man in the club still a potent forward. Gave his all.

Commentary quote of the match:
"I thought that looked OK. Obviously, it looked as though he (Seu Seu) was trying to backslam him (Ward) but it's just the way his  back and then his head hit (the ground)"
- Laurie Daley

REF REPORT:
Tim Mander was unable to keep the 10 metres and the markers were often not square. While he let things like this go, he did over do the whistle blowing in other areas. There are question marks from sides regarding his eye sight on a number of occasions. The only good thing to come out of Mander's refereeing was that he had no real bearing on the result.
Overall rating 3 out 10.
