SOTV PREVIEW:
ROUND 7: SAINTS v NQ COWBOYS
...STOP PRESS...TRENT BARRETT TO PLAY AT LOCK FORWARD IN TODAY'S MATCH!!
Saints go into Sunday's match on a high following last weeks 48-18 hammering of the Northern Eagles. Justin Smith and Wade Forrester both played well last week but find themselves in 1st division to make way for the return of of Wayne Bartrim from injury and Jason Ryles who is coming back from that ridiculous 1 week suspension. The last time these 2 teams met was last year in Townsville, Saints were thrashed 50-4 in abysmal conditions. It  will be interesting to see how far Saints can turn the tables on Sunday.
The Cowboys have just come off a win against Wests Tigers in a match which featured the controversial John Hopoate incidents. The Cowboys line up includes ex-Saint, Damien Smith as well as a number of danger players including half back, Nathan Fien and fullback, Julian O'Neill.
FootyTAB: Win: Saints $1.20, NQ Cowboys $4.00. Handicap: Cowboys 12½ start.

MATCH SUMMARY:
WIN Stadium, 1 April 2001:
ROUND 7: DRAGONS GATE CRASH TOP 8!
SAINTS 48 DESTROY NQ COWBOYS 12
Saints have handed out an almighty thrashing an inept Nth Q Cowboys to the tune of 48-12.
At halftime & with the wind at their backs, Saints led 36-0. It looked like a cake walk for the Dragons who could do no wrong.
Mark Riddell was magnificent again and Craig Smith just blitzed the woeful Cowboys from the opening whistle. A late change to the team was the inclusion of Trent Barrett who was named at Lock but he soon slotted into pivot during general play. The win elevates Saints from 11th position into 8th position on the NRL ladder.
An injury to Craig Smith has soured the victory when he was knocked cold after copping an elbow in the jaw from Cowboys forward, Nick Paterson. Latest reports suggest Smith is OK but it's likely that Paterson will be charged
MATCH REPORT:
This was a match which was dominated by Saints for the first 40 minutes. At half time it was 36-0 and at one point, it looked like a 70 or 80 point thrashing was in the offering. But the magical ride stalled in the 2nd half with both teams posting 12 points each.
Below are the main moments by the clock:
7 min: Ainscough try. Riddell conversion. 6-0
9 min: Blacklock try. Riddell conversion attempt misses. 10-0
16 min: Riddell try & conversion. 16-0
20 min: Hookey try. Riddell conversion missses. 20-0
23 min: Peters try after Roberts steps around Damien Smith. Riddell conversion. 26-0

39 min: Roberts try: Peters kicks 40/20; scrum; Hookey grubbers, Roberts scores. Roberts conversion misses.
HALF TIME: 36-0
44 min: Hooper runaway try. Roberts converts. 42-0
49 min: Line breaks favour Saints 11 to nil - it doesn't stay that way but it is impressive

REF REPORT:
Tim Mander has a reputation for being the home town hero. But our opinion is that he just a plain lazy referee.
In the 5th minute he ruled 6 again against Andrew Hart when the ball was kicked into him from a few metres away. There was no way that Hart had played at this ball. A minute later, Mander evened the ledger by turning a blind eye to Amos Roberts who caught the ball in an offside position.
In the 8th minute, Saints knock on but the ref can't tell for sure so he lets it go.
A worrying incident happened in the 21st minute when Willie Peters was knocked out and remained face down & motionless for some minutes while play continued. The Cowboys had the ball well inside their own half and play was stalled. However, the ref allowed play to to continue when it should have been stopped. Trainers assisted a groggy Peters to his feet and he was OK. So much so that he scored a try moments later but at the time it looked bad and in light of the Nathan Brown incident, one would think that referees should be more sensitive to the players' safety. Lazy and almost dangerous stuff.
Saints scored again in the 25th minute but Mander calls for the vid ref after the ball is knocked back. This is strange because he is right on the spot and has a close up view of the incident, much better than the vid ref. It was a try but what happened to Mander? It's as if he nodded off.
Another forward pass in the 26th minute is missed by Mander, this time it was Saints but throughout the match, he misses a total of 4 forward passes, 2 from each team.
34th minute and Hetherington is penalised for coming in late on a tackled player. Saints get the penalty but we couldn't see anything in this to suggest that the tackle was any later than normal.
In the 49th minute, Cowboys get their first penalty. Saints have 4.
In the 58th minute, the ref misses another knock on, this time his error favours NQ. A minute later, NQ strip the ball in a tackle and get away with it. NQ are getting frustrated and Mander is allowing the NQ players to go on with it in tackles. The ref turns a blind eye.
The ref is spot on in the 64th minute when Jamie Ainscough, who argued with the ref for most of the match, accidentally throws the ball forward and it rebounds off a NQ player, giving the impression that NQ knocked on. Saints are pulled back from scoring a try and the crowd boos but the ref is right.
In the 69th minute, Saints captain, Craig Smith is knocked out by a rising elbow from Nick Paterson. For the 2nd time in a match, Tim Mander allows play to continue for some minutes while a player lays motionless on the ground. This is poor stuff from the ref and the touch judges who have a duty and an obligation to ensure all the player's safety in any match they control.
Considering this, we have to give the big thumbs down to Tim Mander and his side kicks.
Overall Rating: 2 out of 10
