SOTV PREVIEW:
DARREN TREACY MAKES WELCOMED RETURN
Saints go into Friday night's match with the all too familiar 'struggling' tag next to their name. The injury list just gets worse and the suspension of Lance Thompson plus the absurd sidelining of Jason Ryles hasn't helped either.
On the positive side, Saints still have a strong lineup with the versatile Jason Hooper filling in at 5/8 and new forward Wade Forrester who was thrown into first grade last week and came away with a solid performance as well as a try next to his name. Expect another huge offering from cpt Craig Smith. Big news though is the 1st game in 2001 for  Darren Treacy who makes a welcomed return to the back row.
The Eagles have a number of players to watch out for including Brett Kimmoreley, Ben Walker and even though he's past it internationally, back rower Steve Menzies who seems to save his best for the Dragons. Ofcourse there's loudmouth, Geoff Toovey who will no doubt try and scam whatever he can out of the ref.
Saints last 4 starts have coughed up 4 losses while the Eagles have 2 wins from their last 4 and are coming off a win. In 2000, the Eagles won both encounters.
The FootyTAB has surprisingly given the Eagles 1½ start. Sportstab has Saints at $1.90 & the Eagles at $1.80. The weather should be mainly fine. Our tip: Saints by 16

MATCH SUMMARY:
It was 24 - nil at half time.
We had 50% of the ball and still held them out for all of the first half. Then came the 2nd half and the mighty Dragons rallied once again.
Willie Peters was magnificent - scored a double. Jason Hooper monstered his opposite, Ben Walker all night.
Against the odds, this mighty team has found faith in their own abilities to go forward and create opportunities which were beckoning in the previous weeks.
By fulltime, we were running all over them.
The Eagles, in a word were 'bloody awful' - I know that's 2 words but then again we were making twice as many metres tonight such was the awesome display by our forwards.
It was a good night for the Dragons with wins in all 3 grades. Apart from the NRL win, Saints also triumphed in 1st Division (def Nth Eagles 29-28 after being down 28-13 with 8 minutes to go) and Jersey Flegg (def Nth Syd 44-22 in convincing fashion).
At half time, during the 1st grade match, Saints fans had an opportunity to thank Nathan Brown who did a lap of honour. Brownie was forced into premature retirement following a neck and spinal injury. Brown page click here

FULL MATCH REPORT:
The match begins with a penalty goal to Mark Riddell and Saints lead 2-0 after just 3 minutes.

5 minutes later, Mark Riddell crashed over in what is becoming his trademark. From short range and with good play the ball from Craig Smith, Riddell dived over with Adam Muir and others grabbing in despair. There were legs everywhere and the video ref was called, but there was no doubt that Riddell had scored. Conversion misses and Saints led 6-0 in the 8th minute.
For some time, Saints had to defend their line. They saw little ball. In fact the only time they had the ball, the ref ruled a forward pass and the Eagles went back on the attack. On another occasion, Nathan Blacklock fielded a bomb only to lose it forward on the way down and soon after, Jamie Ainscough attempted an intercept (a try saver) only to lose control of the ball and knock on. Finally,
crowd01
Eagles' halfback, Brett Kimmorley & Adam Muir combined to create a shepherd and Saints received a relieving penalty. In all, Saints defended for 8 minutes with virtually no possession and held their line
crowd02
intact. In the 16th minute, Hookey ran down the right side and grubbered forward from 37 metres out. Blacklock soccered the ball forward and almost regathers only to knock on with the line wide open.
3 minutes later, Saints are defending their line again and Kimmorely puts in a cross field bomb. Ainscough plucks the ball from the air runs 70 m before passing to Willie Peters who is tackled. On the back of this great run, Saints are going in for the kill but a desperate Adam Muir strips the ball from Darren Treacy and is penalised. Muir hangs onto the ball and eventually kicks it away. For some reason, the ref doesn't use the sin bin.
In the 20th minute, Peters intercepts a Kimmorley pass 10 m out from Saints' line and runs 45m.
Two minutes later, Blacklock scores in the corner and Saints lead 12-0.
In the 28th minute, Willie Peters kicks out on the full in what will be the only blemish on an otherwise near perfect game. Nevertheless, Saints back themselves in defence and soon the Northern Eagles
are coughing up the ball. In the set that followed, Justin Smith, up the middle of the ruck, got his arms free and managed a magical pass to Peters who burst through 35 metres out from Saints' line. Peters stepped and stood up Steven Menzies and Muir and after a good run, found Amos Roberts on the inside who raced away to score under the posts. Riddell converts and after 32 min, its 18-0.
5 minutes later, Mark Gasnier gets his first try of the year when from acting half, he sells a soft dummy to the marker defence of Geoff Toovey and Muir and he scoots through from 20 m out to score under the posts. With Riddell off the field, Justin Smith converts and Saints lead 24-0.
crowd03
The Phantom siren is heard seconds before the real siren. HALF TIME SAINTS 24 - EAGLES 0.
Saints began the 2nd half in committed fashion with a powerful defensive drive from Andrew Hart which saw Toovey lose the ball in the tackle. 5 minutes later and under pressure, Kimmorley kicks out on the
full giving Saints an excellent attacking opportunity.
In the 46th minute, Jason Hooper scores leaving Toovey, then Trindall, then Reeves in his wake. Blacklock's conversion attempt misses but Saints have a 28-0 lead.
In the 49th minute, the Dragons are carving the Eagles up. An overlap appears at the halfway and it's Mark Gasnier who strides down the left flank before passing inside to Amos Roberts who scores his 2nd try under the posts. Amos, Saints 4th kicker for the night converts and Saints lead 34-0.
In the 55th minute, the Northern Eagles finally get a try when 5/8, Ben Walker, who has been conspicuous by his absence gets through up the middle of the ruck to score. Walker converts and Saints are leading 34-6
In the 58th minute, the Eagles post more points when Brenden Reeves scores. Walker converts. Saints 34-12
crowd04
The Dragons hit back in the 63rd minute. Mark Riddell who has had an outstanding match has just come off the bench and he makes immediate impact with a dummy half run from 25 m out and taking
crowd05
full advantage of poor marker defence. With a massive gap to run through, Riddell races towards the line and draws the last of the staggered defence. He swings a pass to Willie Peters who juggles the ball but hangs on long enough to spin and score next the sticks.
Willie Peters is rewarded minutes later with his 2nd try of the match and all of a sudden the Eagles have been put away. Saints lead by 46-12.
In the 75th minute, Ben Walker gets his 2nd try and converts. Score is now Saints 46 - Eagles 18. Despite scoring most of his team's points, this is a
night which Walker would want to forget. For all intents and purposes, he was shut out by his opposite, Jason Hooper and was done no favours whatsoever by the shallow backline which the Eagles presented
crowd06
to the Dragon's defence all night.
This was no more evident than in the 78th minute when Walker, while attempting a line drop out decided to kick short and only managed a 5 metre kick. Notwithstanding the fact that a short drop out was a fruitless exercise in any case, the fact that the ball trickled off the boot in such a fashion was representative of the night the Eagles were having. Much to the annoyance of some of the crowd who wanted another try, Mark Riddell quickly took the penalty kick for goal to extend the lead to 48-18.
But then things got even worse for the Eagles and
Walker when he kicked out on the full from the restart. With only seconds remaining, Saints took the
kick for touch and in a match that seemed to have everything, Mark Riddell attempted a field goal which was charged down by an Eagles player. The ball then rebounded onto Riddell's chin and into the waiting arms of Jason Hooper who was some metres in front of the kicker. Hooper raced forward and the passed the ball to Nathan Blacklock who raced over to 'score' and then did a somersault to boot! To many it looked as if Saints had notched up a half century.
As it turned out, the ref went for the video ref who must have consulted his rule book before declaring NO TRY and awarding a penalty against Saints for accidental offside. Kimmorley, who'd had enough and with the game, decided to take no chances. He tapped the ball before kicking it out to bring about fulltime.

REF REPORT:
We had a few problems with Paul Simpkins tonight.
Why he didn't send Adam Muir to the sin bin early in the match is beyond me. The infringement, stripping a ball when Saints looked sure to score derserved more than a penalty. Unfortunately, the current trend of refs is not to use the sin bin.
He also probably found a few unwarranted penalties including a scrum penalty of all things. He missed a number of off the ball incidents including an obstruction which should have seen Saints penalised but he was happy to penalise Craig Smith for a ridiculous obstruction where Smith never moved. A complete over reaction by the ref.
Also, I question the penalising of Treacy for not getting up.
The main gripe is that Simpkins was often reluctant to keep the players back 10 metres.
Not that any of this made any difference to the outcome as the Dragons gave Simpkins little opportunity to wreck the game with petty penalties as they ripped through their opponents.
Overall rating: 4 out of 10.
