the fundamentals of running in possession
RUNNING IN POSSESSION
All players have a natural style of running, on and off the
football field. Running on a football field can be improved by:
-
The stride. The ideal stride is one with a definite action or rhythm.
Often though, the player with big strong legs becomes harder to tackle
if he uses a high knee-raising stride and he should be encouraged to use
this style.
-
Arm movement. The arm movement is most important. Players should
move their shoulders and arms vigorously whilst running as this makes it
harder for them to be tackled.
-
Correct body position. When you run with the ball lean forward.
This often makes it possible to bump off a tackle, or obtain leverage of
a tackle. Once again leaning forward makes you harder to tackle from
the head-on position.
-
Determination: Watch any great winger - note the determined way he "flies"
for that try line as though nothing can prevent him scoring. You
imitate him. The determined runner is a very hard man to bring down.
Running in possession - under attack.
