Chapter 7  The Fundamentals of Rugby League (Section 5)

the fundamentals of running in possession

RUNNING IN POSSESSION

All players have a natural style of running, on and off the football field. Running on a football field can be improved by:

  1. The stride.  The ideal stride is one with a definite action or rhythm.  Often though, the player with big strong legs becomes harder to tackle if he uses a high knee-raising stride and he should be encouraged to use this style.
  2. Arm movement.  The arm movement is most important. Players should move their shoulders and arms vigorously whilst running as this makes it harder for them to be tackled.
  3. Correct body position.  When you run with the ball lean forward.  This often makes it possible to bump off a tackle, or obtain leverage of a tackle.  Once again leaning forward makes you harder to tackle from the head-on position.
  4. Determination: Watch any great winger - note the determined way he "flies" for that try line as though nothing can prevent him scoring.  You imitate him.  The determined runner is a very hard man to bring down.
