MUNDINE KNOCKED OUT
Dortmund, 1 December 2001: Germany's Sven Ottke has retained his IBF super middle weight title after knocking out Australia's Anthony Mundine in the tenth round.
Mundine matched it with Ottke for the first nine rounds but Ottke's experience came through late in the tenth round when he delivered a short jab to the temple. Mundine was knocked out cold and remained motionless throughout the referee's count. The loss is Mundine's first from 11 bouts.
In the eighth round, Ottke was deemed to have slipped as he went down. Mundine forced the issue in the ninth and the German went on the defensive.
The champion, however, showed his class and came back in the tenth to post his 25th straight victory and his 12th successful title defence.
Anthony Mundine left the ring on both feet but he has before him an uncertain future. He has always maintained that a world championship boxing title is his goal however, there has been some speculation that he may return to Rugby League in 2002.

The world's greatest winger has been given a run as Australian selectors finally ran out of excuses. Today they opted to go with a new winger for the third and deciding Ashes Test match to be staged at Wigan this Saturday night.
20 Nov: Test winger, Lote Tuqiri is battling to overcome a knee injury and Nathan Blacklock has been confirmed as the standby player. Tuqiri's misfortune will give Tingha a great opportunity represent Australia at the highest level.
At just 25 years of age, Blacklock's claims cannot be denied. He has been the season's top try scorer for 3 season's running and has scored 20 tries or more for the last 4 seasons.
1998- 20 tries; 1999- 24 tries; 2000- 25 tries; 2001- 27 tries (St George club record).
Mark Gasnier, however, looks to have missed out with news that Adam MacDougall is recovering well from his ankle injury. Gasnier was rumoured to be MacDougall's replacement.
18 Nov: Rumours suggest that Trent Barrett will be team captain for the 2002 season. Late in the 2001 season, Barrett filled in as captain following Craig Smith's suspension and injury to Lance Thompson. Favourite for the job was Thompson but Barrett's international experience was probably instrumental in seeing him get the nod.

05 Nov: COUNCIL REJECTS CAHILL PARK
Cr Peter Bryant of Rockdale Council has informed interested parties that Cahill Park is not a suitable location for the proposed St George Stadium. Late last month, Barton Park was all but scrapped as the proposed location for the Soccer and RL Stadium. Cahill Park, Arncliffe was put forward as an alternative.
This latest news places re-newed pressure on St George Leagues Club to reconsider Kogarah Jubilee Oval as an option for a St George Home Ground.
For all latest updates, see our Home Ground issues section
05 Nov: It has been confirmed that Colin Ward will be playing with Penrith Panthers in 2002. Wardy has had a long stint with Saints and following injury was apparently all washed up in 2000. He recovered to play a strong season and represented City Origin in 2001. Colin Ward page.
01 Nov: KANGAROO TEAM ANNOUNCED
The Australian team to take on Great Britain in the first Test has been announced. Trent Barrett has been named at 5/8 and Jason Ryles gets his first match on English soil as a bench player.
Despite being tipped as a possible starter, Mark Gasnier has missed out on a centre position with selectors opting for Lyon and Gidley. Nathan Blacklock has also been overlooked with Tuqiri and MacDougall getting the wing spots. The entire squad of 21 leave for the UK next Monday.
The first Test will be played at Huddersfield's McAlpine Stadium on November 11.
The team: Darren Lockyer, Lote Tuqiri, Jamie Lyon, Matthew Gidley, Adam MacDougall, Trent Barrett, Andrew Johns, Brad Fittler (capt), Dane Carlaw, Ben Kennedy, Jason Stevens, Danny Buderus, Robbie Kearns. Interchange: Petero Civoniceva, Michael Vella, Braith Anasta, Jason Ryles
17 Oct: KIMMORLEY SUING THE NRL & DRAGONS
Brett Kimmorley has lodge documents with the Industrial Relations Commission claimimg 'restriction of trade' by the NRL. Last month, the NRL refused Kimmorley a special salary cap exemption after he had earlier knocked back the Eagles offer of $560,000. Kimmorley and his manager, Sam Ayoub are effectively putting the validity of the salary cap to the test.
Additionally, Kimmorley is suing the Dragons claiming that they had renigged on their offer of a contract.
The NRL claim that they are not under obligation to exempt Kimmorley from the salary cap and the Dragons claim that their offer of a contract depended on the NRL decision.
16 Oct: Saints' CEO, Peter Doust has announced that the Dragons have ceased discussions with Brett Kimmorley. The ex- Melbourne and Eagles half back was reportedly seeking $560,000 per year but salary cap restrictions stalled negotiations. Kimmorley's future is now up in the air with no club making any immediate offers.
15 Oct: KANGAROO TOUR BACK ON Following sustained pressure, the ARL has agreed to a shortened tour of the UK which will include just 3 Test matches. This is great news for Dragon Kangaroo debutantes, Jason ("I'd tour Afghanistan if it meant playing for Australia") Ryles, Mark Gasnier and Nathan Blacklock who has been reported in the press as being delighted with the news. Trent Barrett who was originally reluctant to tour will also be joining the team.
11 Oct: KANGAROO TOUR POSTPONED Due to the US led bombing of Afghnistan, the ARL has decided to postponed the Kangaroo tour of England until 2002. Apparently a number of player's expressed concern and the ARL decided to pull the plug. Seen in many circles as a complete over reaction, the decision was based on world uncertainty.
A number of players, including Trent Barrett, Nathan Blacklock, Mark Gasnier and Jason Ryles have expressed dissapointment at the decision while UK (& ex-Saints) coach, David Waite has expressed 'bitter' disappointment. The British RL stands to lose a substantial amount of money now that the tour has been shelved.
07 Oct:
TINGHA SCORES DOUBLE ON DEBUT
Nathan Blacklock has scored 2 tries on debut as Australia ran out winners 54-12 over The Papua New Guinea Kumuls.
Mark Gasnier also scored a try, a sensational 80 metre effort.
The Kumuls looked like they may be able to make a game of it with a try just before half time and the score favouring Australia 18-6 but in the end the Kangaroos ran away with it.

06 Oct: Nathan Blacklock has been selected to play in the run on side for Australia in Sundays match against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls. This is tremendous news and brings to an end the the long wait for representative honours for Tingha. Most will agree that he should have selected for NSW earlier this year. However, he was continually overlooked despite his outstanding record.
The Australian team arrived in Port Moresby yesterday and were greeted by 10,000 cheering fans proving again the great support for Rugby League in PNG.
04 Oct: Regular 1st division forward, Wade Forrester has signed with Manly for 2002. Also a regular in 1st division, Daniel Heckenberg will be going to Parramatta where he will join team mate, Andrew Meads.
Rumours persist that Darren Treacy has signed with UK club, Salford.
Another rumour doing the rounds is that Willie Peters is also talking to a UK club.
The Brett Kimmorley saga contnues with no firm news about where he will be in 2002. Saints have been hot favourites for his signature but negotiations have been hampered by salary cap restrictions.
01 Oct: Trent Barrett, Nathan Blacklock, Mark Gasnier and Jason Ryles have been been selected for Australian squad on the upcoming Kangaroo tour (see tour schedule below). Congratulations guys from all of us at SOTV. And a special acknowledgement to Tingha who finally gets acknowledgement as being one of the outstanding wingers of the modern era.

28 Sep: Phil Gould has announced on Radio 2GB (Sydney) that the Roosters will not be signing Brett Kimmorley. There was suggestion earlier in the week that the Roosters would be signing Kimmorley while Saints would be signing half back Paul Green. It is expected that Green will remain with the Roosters. This latest news makes Saints short odds favourites to sign Kimmorley for 2002. An announcement is expected early next week.
20 Sep: Brett Kimmorley has been linked to Saints for some time now but rumours in Wollongong this week had the ex-Eagles & Storm halfback lunching with Andrew Farrar and Trent Barrett.
Darren Treacy looks likely to sign with Salford (UK) for 2002.
Lee Hookey has been asking for sometime to be released so he can play with Souths next year and Saints look like they might allow him to leave.
Willie Peters rumoured to be with Souths next year. This rumoured received a boost with the possible signing of Kimmorley.
Andrew Hart may not be leaving afterall. Hart has already signed with Souths but rumours suggest that a deal has been struck with the Rabbitohs were Saints will release Hookey and Peters in exchange for Hart. Apparently Andrew Hart has been having second thoughts about leaving the red and whites.
17 Sep: Trent Barrett, Nathan Blacklock, Jason Ryles and Mark Gasnier have made the Kangaroo train-on squad. Congratulations to the guys for making the squad and heres hoping all 4 gain final tour selection.

13 Sep: The Charity Shield is back on for 2002.
Saints and Souths will contest the traditional season opener for the first time in 2 years.
George Piggins' Rabbitoh's had hoped for the match to be played against Canterbury or Newcastle but the round one 'local derbies concept' at the SCG soon changed the scheduling.
Dragons CEO, Peter Doust approached Souths officials who immediately agreed to playing Saints in the first match of 2002.
The Charity Shield has been going since 1982 and has always been a tremendous way to open the season. It should be a cracker of a match and will no doubt draw a huge crowd.
12 Sep: It has been announced that there will be a minute's silence before the kickoff of next Saturday's elimination semi between St George and Brisbane. Last night at about 11pm (AEST), breaking news reports showed the New York World Trade Centre being hit by one, then two hijacked commercial airliners. This ultimately led to the collapse of the Twin Towers and the surrounding buildings. The death toll is expected to go into the thousands. The Pentagon in Washington was also struck by a hijacked airplane. The minutes silence is in remembrance of these

12 Sep: Jason Ryles last night took the Dragons Player of the Year Award at the prestigious Integral Energy Awards at the Novetel Hotel in Wollongong.
Dragons versatile lock Jason Hooper, took out the Geoff Selby memorial award - the coaches award for outstanding contribution to the team. Ryan Cullen picked up the Jersey Flegg Paul McGregor Player of the Year award and Reece Simmonds won the Mark Coyne Player of the Year award for first division.
10 Sep: Tonight at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney, Nathan Blacklock received the Dally M Positional Award for Wing. Preston Campbell from the Sharks received the Dally M Player of the Year.
10 Sep: Saints lead up to week 2 of the semis received a boost today when Jason Hooper was NOT charged by the Match Review Committee. Hooper was placed on report after an accidental head high in last Friday's qualifying final against Canterbury. He is now cleared to take on Brisbane this Saturday.
Saints have also been bouyed by the news that injured players, Lance Thompson and Amos Roberts look likely to be named in the team tomorrow. Coach Andrew Farrar has said that he will give both players every opportunity to prove their fitness before Saturday. Thompson was injured 3 weeks ago (knee) while Roberts had to leave the field in the 60th minute (ankle) of last Friday night's match.
09 Sep: St George Illawarra have announced their coaches for the 2002 season. Current first grade coach Andrew Farrar will remain as the head coach in the 2002 season. But, in Jersey Flegg and First Division there will be two new coaches for 2002.
Current First Division coach Brian Johnson will take up a position as head coach in the AIS for rugby league, and will be replaced by former Dally M winner Michael Potter. Potter, a former Bulldog, Dragon, and a Perth Reds player, will once again link up with his former Bulldog team mate Andrew Farrar this time on the coaching front. Potter will have a big task at hand in replacing Johnson who took the first division team to the minor premiership this year.
In Jersey Flegg, former Dragons hooker, Nathan Brown will take over from caretaker coach Anthony Barnes for the 2002 season. Brown, a current St.George Illawarra trainer, will be a terrific coach for the future Dragons. Written by: Michael Carayannis at Jubilee Avenue
06 Sep: The appeals committee, headed by Laurence Street QC with Kevin Roberts and Grant Butterfield, has completely exonerated Trent Barrett of the striking charge which was handed down by the judiciary yesterday.
Commissioner Jim Hall, in his capacity as Match Review Committee boss, originally cited Barrett on a grade 2 striking charge in a late and controversial decision. The Dragons playmaker faced 3 weeks on the sideline. This was successfully reduced to a grade 1 striking charge when the judiciary panel didn't fully agree with Jim Hall (who is also the judiciary commissioner) and Barrett received a 1 week suspension.
Barrett's advocate, Alan Sullivan QC (ex judiciary commissioner) then took the matter to the appeals tribunal.
SOTV pic Trent Barrett
They found that judiciary commissioner Jim Hall had failed to prove on the balance of probabilities that the contact was intentional.
SOTV pic Trent Barrett
"The critical question is whether Mr Barrett could be seen to give his arm what might be an extra nudge or whether the contact was part of the physical interaction between the two players," Street said in his summation.
"The view of the majority of us is that the evidence is not adequate to establish positively on the balance of probability that the requisite intention was present.
"It may have been intentional, it may not. The view of the majority of the tribunal is the player should have the benefit of the doubt by bringing in a finding that the decision of the judiciary should be quashed."
Barrett will now captain his side in Saturday night's Qualifying Final against the Bulldogs.
05 Sep:After an eternity of 'debate', Trent Barrett has received a one week suspension.
Originally, he was to get 2 weeks suspension if he entered a 'guilty' plea but would received 3 weeks if found guilty after entering a 'not guilty' plea. He entered a 'not guilty' plea and most thought this would mean 3 weeks. However, he ended getting just the single match suspension.
On Monday, in a late and retrospective decision, the NRL Match Review Committee cited Trent Barrett on a grade 2 striking charge. It is the opinion of many that the charges should never have been laid in the first place.
Barrett's advocate, Alan Sullivan successfully argued that the grade 2 striking charge should be downgraded to a grade 1 striking charge and this brought about the lesser penalty
In light of the persistant inconsistencies of this judiciary, this decision is baffling to say the least. But at least it gives Saints something to aim at this Saturday night...
Late reports indicate that Barrett has sought leave to appeal the suspension.
03 Sep: In an extraordinary decision, the NRL Match Review Committe has cited Trent Barrett on a grade 2 striking charge. The tackling incident occurred in the 1st minute of  last Friday's match against C'bury. Pics - click here. If Barrett enters a guilty plea he will cop a 2 match suspension. If he decides to fight the charge and is found guilty, he will cop a 3 match suspension.
A major question mark remains as to the reason for the charge and why other incidents have been ignored. Claims of bias against Saints cannot be ignored. Jim Hall, who fronts the judiciary and the MRC has already shown this year that he has no concern for consistency and appears committed to bring the Dragons down.
The club has issued a brief statement which says they will be makng a decision on the charge tomorrow.
03 Sep: Saints have signed three players for 2002. Former Dragon forward, Luke Felsch, 27 who departed from St George in 1998 returns from Hull FC (UK) and will most likely replace Craig Smith in the front row. Also signed are Bulldogs Jersey Flegg halfback, Dean Byrne and Nth Eagles centre/winger, Christian Hill.
24 Aug: The Craig Smith saga officially and finally came to an end today when the front rower instructed Dragons management not to pursue the matter of his suspension through the courts. There was some talk that legal proceedings were a possibility following Smith's failure to gain leave to appeal a six week suspension.
22 Aug: Craig Smith has failed to gain leave to appeal his six week suspension. It appears that Smith's only chance of playing in Australia again will depend on Saints making the Grand Final. NRL Judiciary Chairman, Greg Woods QC described Smith's situation as being 'crystal clear'. The Dragons sought leave to appeal the suspension on the grounds that the original decision was flawed. Smith was represented by former judiciary chairman Alan Sullivan. The front rower was understandably upset by the decision but expressed a belief that he may still be there on Grand Final day.
22 Aug: Roosters v Dragons to be annual Anzac Day clash. The NRL is set to build itself a permanent Anzac Day fixture with the Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra Dragons locked in to do battle at the Sydney Football Stadium next season. from Jubilee Ave
20 Aug: The Dragons annouced today that they will be applying to the NRL to appeal against the Judiciaries' decision to suspend Craig Smith. If successful, the appeal will be heard by an NRL Appeals Committee. This will be made up of the President of the Appeals Committee, a nominee of the Director of Referees and a nominee of the Chairman of the Players Association.
CEO, Peter Doust said "As we have said all along we want to support our captain and we will utilise the avenues within the NRL rules. We don’t want to make any more comments at this stage given the nature of the circumstances."
17 Aug: Craig Smith has signed a 2 year deal to play with Wigan thereby confirming week's of speculation about the prop forward's future. Smith said he was keen to join Saints team mate, Jamie Ainscough. Wigan coach, Stuart Raper said that he is 'unfazed' by the Smith's NRL judiciary record.
15 Aug (Wed): SMITH SUSPENDED
In a black day for Rugby League, Craig Smith has been found guilty by the NRL Judiciary of a grade 3 striking charge and has been suspended for six weeks. This means that Smith will only be available to play should the Dragons make the Grand Final on September 30.Smith, 29 acted within his rights when contesting the charge which resulted from a tackle in last Sunday's match against Brisbane. The incident saw Brisbane's Kevin Walters suffer a fracture in the orbital eye socket and a fracture in his nose and this led to Smith being cited by the Match Review Committee. Most observer's agree that this was an accidental knock and it now appears that the Judiciary is acting upon the media frenzy which followed the injury to Walters.
In particular, Brisbane's coach, Wayne Bennett was repeatedly highly critical of the ref Tim Mander for not acting on the incident in the first instance. For some reason, Bennett was not called upon to qualify his comments. The usual practice being that coaches are fined for openly criticising referees.
Additionally, the media highlighted Smith's past record and often focussed on the actual injury to Walters. Very little attention was given to the fact that this was an accident.
St George Leagues Club put up a solid defence and kindred spirit, Phil Gould was there to talk on Smith's behalf. Gould was invited to the hearing by coach Andrew Farrar after Gould was heard on TV and radio defending Smith. Gould put up a spirited argument often thumping the Judiciary table as he repeatedly reminded the panel that Smith had no idea that his arm was going to come into contact with Walters' head and claimed that Smith was a victim of circumstances.
The panel of Darrell Williams, Royce Ayliffe, Ian Roberts and Commissioner Jim Hall didn't agree. Hall said Smith's tackle had: "...forceful, deliberate or highly reckless contact....There was no need for Smith to lead with his elbow as he fell to the ground on the defenceless Bronco halfback."
In the end, Smith was suspended and his career in Australia is probably over. A contract he had earlier signed with Wigan for 2002 is now back on the rails.  Smith  has only played 15 matches in Australia in 2001. UK import rules require that Smith should have played at least 16 matches to qualify as an import but this has been waived because Smith is a current international.
It's no secret that Judiciary and MRC boss, Jim Hall has been targeting Smith all year. The inconsistency of this system is now beyond a joke. For all intents and purposes, it looks as if Jim Hall has finally had his way and seen one of Rugby League's best front rowers out of the game.
CEO, Peter Doust has said that he they will wait until Monday before making a decision on a possible appeal.

14 Aug: DRAGONS TO TAKE ON THE JUDICIARY
Today's official site reports that the club will defending Craig Smith 'wholeheartedly'. Smith was charge with a grade 3 striking charge by Jim Hall's Match Review Committee following the Dragons victory over Brisbane last Sunday. If found guilty, Smith's career in Australia is all but over. He has been reportedly signed to play with Wigan in the UK in 2002.
Smith was cited after the MRC viewed an incident where Smith's forearm came into contact with Kevin Walters' face, breaking an eye socket and nose. The replay shows that both players fell together and an accident occurred. It is clear that Smith did not act in a deliberate manner and this should be his main defence. The hearing, in front of Jim Hall's Judiciary, is set down for Wednesday (15 Aug) night.
13 Aug: Construction of an $8 million northern grandstand at WIN Stadium will begin next week after a contract for the building was signed today. The upgrade will include seating from the Homebush Olympic Aquatic Centre. Funding for the upgrade will come from the Wollongong Sportsground Trust and WIN Corporation ($4MIL) and  the NSW government ($4MIL).
Work is expected to be completed by March 2002 and will increase the ground capacity to near 20,000.
Wayne Bartrim about to kick another goal for St George_round 16 2000
08 Aug: Further to rumours on July 24 (see earlier news) and more recent news this month (see 02 Aug), 29 year old Wayne Bartrim has officially signed with Castleford (UK) on a 2 year deal which begins in 2002.
A goal kicker with a proud record, Bartrim has also served well as a utility forward, be it at lock or hooker.
Wayne has extensive experience at club, state and international level and it's no doubt that he'll be a great asset to Castleford. Wayne Bartrim's loyalty to the Dragons has never been a question and he will be sorely missed. We wish him all the best for the future and hope that he sees 2001 off on a positive note.
08 Aug:  The Dragons and the Rabbitohs are now set to play in round 1 of the the 2002 season at the SCG. This follows a bit of speculation over the actual home ground venue but common sense has prevailed and Souths will host Saints at the historic venue in what should be a sell out match!
07 Aug: Saints winger, Jamie Ainscough has officially signed with UK ESL Grand Finalists, Wigan Warriors for 2002 and 2003. It was previously reported that club officials agreed to release
Jamie from his contract which originally concluded next year. (see June 14, Old News 2001). Jamie has English born parents which means he qualifies for a European passport therefore by-passing restrictions.
“I am delighted to be coming to England, I have intended on going for some time now, said Jamie, I know that the Australians currently playing at Wigan are very impressed by the club and I also know that the standards both at Wigan and in Super League as a whole are very high”
Having relatives in both countries, the Ainscoughs also wanted to spend time in the UK following the birth of a son (see May 3 Old News, 2001).
A former Australian schoolboy rep and Australian Test three quarter, Jamie Ainscough
Jamie Ainscough_ Saints On TV pic from round 3, 2000
came to St George from Newcastle in 1997. He probably played his best football with the Dragons and he is arguably playing the best football of his career in 2001 having gained selection for NSW in the State of Origin series. For one game in 2001, he was honoured with the Saints' captaincy (from wing position) in round 4 (v NZ Warriors) when Craig Smith was injured.
We wish Jamie and his family all the best for the future. Without a doubt, he is a player who will be greatly missed in 2002.
03 Aug: Peter Doust has announced that plans will be going ahead for the Barton Park complex and this might see Saints playing in the St George district in 2005. Full update: click here
02 Aug: It's been confirmed that Andrew Hart and Jamie Fitzgerald have signed to play with Souths in 2002. Hart has signed for 3 years and Fitzgerald for 2 years. Fitzgerald, a top notch defender, has played much of the year in 1st division and can hardly be blamed for wanting to move on. Hart has failed to come to terms with the club after an inconsistent 2001. We wish them both all the best and hope to see them both on deck come semi final time.
Wayne Bartrim has reportedly signed a 2 year deal to play with Castleford (UK) and looks like this will be last year as a Dragon. Although yet to be confirmed, it does appear to be done deal.
This is an add on to rumour which was reported in Saints On TV on July 24. We're still waiting for final confirmation.
01 Aug: BLACKLOCK A SAINT UNTIL 2004
The news this evening, Wed Aug 1, 8:20pm:
Blacklock a Dragon until 2004 Written by: Michael Murray
Dragons fans all over the world can breathe a sigh of relief with tonight's news that favourite son Nathan Blacklock has been re-signed until the end of 2004.
NRL on Fox has reported that a new deal was struck early this evening, minus the controversial clause which would have given him the option to leave the club if he was selected for Australia.
Contrary to an irresponsible newspaper report in today's Telegraph, the superstar winger is more than happy with his situation.
“It’s terrific – I feel like a Dragon, I should remain a Dragon. Over the last 24 hours, the goodwill extended by my fellow players and the Club has shown me the way.
I am pleased to get on with my football – my real passion. I believe we will win a premiership at the Dragons.”  - Nathan Blacklock
Our view: The Daily Telegraph failed in their duty to report the facts in a credible manner today and may have caused some disruption to Saints preparation for Friday's match against Parramatta. The club and Peter Doust in particular should be praised for handling the matter in a swift and professional manner.
For anyone wishing to complain to the Daily Telegraph about the paper's conduct in this matter can access the papers feedback link from here: http://www.dailytelegraph.news.com.au/

01 Aug: TINGHA TO REMAIN A DRAGON - EMAIL FROM MR PETER DOUST DRAGONS CEO
Media Release
DRAGONS FOCUS ON PARRAMATTA
Tingha St George Illawarra Dragons today issued a press statement saying they were disappointed with the headline “I want to quit” which was attributed to Nathan Blacklock, but stated it would not unsettle their preparations for Friday night’s big game against the Parramatta Eels.
The Dragons stated that the facts of the matter are:
Nathan signed a four-year contract with the Dragons on the 4th July 2000 ensuring he played until the end of 2004.
The four-year term being an extended term, recognised Nathan’s and the Dragon’s interest in a long-term relationship.
Given the four-year term, both parties thought it appropriate to include a Clause that would enable an upgrade to occur if and when Nathan played State of Origin or for Australia.
Nathan was disappointed with his non-selection in State of Origin at the time and was contemplating Rugby Union.
The Club was, as were many Rugby League followers, very pleased to see Nathan added to the Australian Touring Party.
The Club had been negotiating the upgrade to Nathan’s contract prior to him being added to the Touring Party, based on Nathan’s performances for the Dragons in 2001 - again not an uncommon practice in Football Clubs.
The Club expects to finalise the negotiations this week.

Chief Executive Officer of the Dragons Peter Doust said he was surprised by the headline given his conversations with Nathan.  “Nathan and I have developed a very close relationship over the 12 months I have been involved with the Club and only this week, arising from the rumours, we agreed we couldn’t see him in anything other than the red and white”.  He went on to say “The Club believes Nathan will play Rugby League at the top level for a long time and we see his contribution to the Dragons as a very important element of our success going forward”.

Nathan Blacklock stated “I agree, I can’t see myself in anything other than the red and white”.

01 Aug:More news has broken today that Nathan Blacklock is dissatisfied with the Dragons. A Sydney Telegraph (right) article quotes Blacklock as wanting to leave Saints and join Cronulla so he can be part of a more 'open style of play' and also to be with his Tingha cousin and old team mate, Preston Campbell.
In an almost opposite version of the story, The Illawarra Mercury has run a report which has the club set to sign Nathan to a new contract this week.
The Telegraph article would have us believe that Tingha is battling for recognition within his own club and that in itself gives the article a lack of credibilty. Unfortunately, we simply don't know enough at this stage to verify Nathan Blacklock's position with the club.
While the issue is confusing to say the least, a question mark has now been raised over Chris Anderson's involvement in the whole affair. Anderson, Australian coach and Cronulla's coach for 2002 is rumoured to have made certain assurances to Blacklock while he with the Australian Test squad in New Zealand earlier this month.

Blacklock stuns Dragons
By KATRINA BEIKOFF
FREAKISH try scorer Nathan Blacklock has stunned the Dragons, confirming he is looking to move to the Sharks under Australian coach Chris Anderson because he feels St George Illawarra have no faith in him.
Blacklock yesterday launched a stinging attack on the Dragons management, claiming he wanted to switch clubs because his current team didn't want him.
The move has dazed the Dragons, who believe they are close to locking Blacklock back into his four-year contract, significantly increasing his current $170,000 deal and eliminating a "get-out" clause that would have allowed the star winger to negotiate with other clubs once he was picked to play for Australia.
But Blacklock yesterday said he was "heartbroken" over questions he believed Dragons officials had raised over whether he would be able to maintain his form and speed if he was secured by the club for four more years.
"They said these things and they're the kind of things that stick with you," Blacklock said yesterday.
"Now I'm keen to just pack up and go.
"I'm just trying to find a club that's got confidence in me."
Blacklock said he was also frustrated at the club because he no longer wanted to "just sit on the wing and watch the game go by".
"There's a lot in what (injured Sharks winger and rugby union recruit) Mat Rogers says about wanting to get more involved in the game.
"I know where he's coming from but look where I still am," Blacklock said.
Blacklock is the NRL's top try scorer with 22 tries in 21 games this year.
It is the fourth year in a row the entertaining winger has bettered 20 tries in a season – which is a record.
He said he was keen to move to the Sharks because they had a more open style of play and he could again team up with his cousin and old Tingha teammate Preston Campbell.
Dragons coach Andrew Farrar said yesterday the club did not want to lose Blacklock.
"Why would we want to replace someone who scores a try a game?" Farrar said.
"You'd have to have rocks in your head."
And Dragons chief executive Peter Doust said Blacklock's claims were "inexplicable".
Doust said Blacklock's four-year contract signed last year was one of the more unusual in the NRL but was designed to ensure the 24-year-old played out his career with the Dragons.
The get-out clause in the contract allowed Blacklock to test the market once he made the Australian team but gave the Dragons the last right of refusal, Doust said.
Blacklock toured New Zealand earlier this month as a back-up player but has not yet worn the green and gold on the field.
His selection in future representative teams is considered inevitable which is why the Dragons have re-opened negotiations on the contract so they can eliminate the clause.
Sharks football general manager Steve Rogers said the club had held no firm discussions with Blacklock.
"I've heard the rumours and that's all they are," Rogers said.
Anderson said he had also had no definite discussions with Blacklock.
"If he was available and wanted to come, we'd want to have him," Anderson said.
Blacklock, who has also previously indicated his frustrations by announcing he wanted to quit rugby league for union on missing NSW State of Origin selection, said he was so hurt when he learned of the Dragon's concerns he was prepared to walk away.
"It was heartbreaking," he said.
"I try to play my best but all they worry about is my body weight and body shape and that I would not be able to keep up my performance or my speed.
"They have no faith in me.
"I'm doing the best I can for the team but if that's the way they think, I'll move on."

Illawarra Mercury:
1st August 2001
Doust expects to pin Blacklock down
By PAUL SUTTOR
St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust has reassured Dragons fans there will be no repeat of Nathan Blacklock's contract dramas.
Blacklock has a clause in his contract where he will become a free agent if he plays Test football and Doust said the crowd-pleasing winger's contract was the only one of its kind within the club.
``I think the Blacklock thing was a case where when we signed a contract, which was a four-year contract, quite a long contract, we wanted to see him finish his career as a Dragon,'' he said.
``There's always a debate with manager and the club as to `what if the player does this or what if he does that' so both parties are safeguarded.
``We just said if he represents, and let's hope he does, then let's give him an opportunity (to renegotiate).''
Blacklock had previously stated he would consider a switch to rugby union following his controversial snub from the representative selectors.
Doust said he expected to finalise the drama by the end of the week and lock Blacklock into the remaining three years of his original contract.
The Dragons boss paid tribute to Blacklock's efforts with the joint-venture club over the past three years where the winger from Tingha has topped the try-scoring lists for three successive years, amassing 71 tries for St George Illawarra in just 73 games.
``He has put up this year another season of try-scoring feats that make him special,'' he said.
``You could say it was a fluke after one year and the second year was unusual, but after the third year you can't say anything but he is a special product.''
Blacklock has scored 22 tries from 21 games this year and is well clear of his nearest rivals, Bulldogs winger Hazem El Masri and Brisbane's Lote Tuqiri, who have notched up 16 touchdowns apiece.
Only two other players in premiership history have topped the try-scoring tally in three consecutive seasons - South Sydney three-quarter Benny Wearing from 1927-29 and Gordon Wright, for Easts, from 1919-21.

28 July: It's been revealed today in the Sydney Morning Herald that Nathan Blacklock has a get out clause in his contract which allows him to become a free agent if he is selected on the Kangaroo tour. Saints mgt began a review of his contract with Blacklock's manager, George Mimis 2 weeks ago.
"When we re-signed him for four years, his goal was always to play representative football and the clause was a way of recognising that.
"I'm sure that there would be a lot of interest in Nathan if he was to become available but we believe he should be a Dragon for life and we're talking with his manager at the moment." - Peter Doust
SOTV view: Saints should rectify this issue as soon as possible. Whatever Tingha wants, he's worth it!

24 July: Half back, Willie Peters has been named as five eighth in 1st Division for next weekend's Penrith match. His place in the first grade will be taken by Ben Hornby.
Keiran Kerr is currently still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Despite beginning the year in blistering form, Peters has been struggling in recent times and has often been found wanting defensively in the three quarter line against the bigger attacking centres.
Saints put in a dismal effort last weekend against the Cowboys and it is no surprise to see the axe fall.
Peters' dropping to first division add more fuel to the rumour that he may be moving to Souths in 2002
24 July: Unconfirmed reports in the UK press state that Wayne Bartrim is set to sign with Castleford for season 2002.
23 July: From the official site:
The St George Illawarra Dragons today announced that they had completed deals with a number of
players for 2002.
Heading the list is Kieran Kerr, the exciting young halfback who joined the club this season, has
re-signed for the 2002 season with an option for 2003.
Craig Stapleton, the tough uncompromising front rower who has made several first grade appearances
this season has also resigned with the Club for a further two years.
Justin Smith, another young player with great potential, has also been upgraded and will join the
Dragons full time squad in 2002.
In addition Chris Leikvoll, Lee Hookey, Gary McBride and Ian Donnelly have all signed extended deals with the Club for a further two years.
The Club has also agreed to terms with Nathan Tutt from the Sydney Roosters for the next two years.
The 21 year old back rower has plenty of pace and size and is highly rated by Club officials.
The Dragons have also recruited 21 year old five eight/lock Damien Bower, the captain of the Northern Eagles 1st Division side, for a two year period.
Commenting on the signings, Dragons Chief Executive Peter Doust said “These signings and
extensions are in line with our policy of supplementing our top squad with high quality young players
to whom we can add value through our coaching staff and development expertise.”
19 July: Goods news for Trent Barrett who had his Australian Test Jersey returned after the bag containing his gear was stolen from his car. The jersey was found in a Wollongong resident's front yard and reported after Trent made a plea for it's return on TV. The Green and Gold Kangaroo jumper holds particular significance to the star five eighth as it was his first Aussie jumper to have the #6 on it.
18 July: The Dragons and the Rabbitohs are tipped to play in the opening round of the 2002 premiership. These quotes according to the Sydney Telegraph.
"If you needed a bit of feeling in a game, this would add the right flavour' - George Piggins
"If he (Piggins) wants it, we'd be only too pleased" - Peter Doust
"It would be wrong not to give this match strong consideration" - David Moffett
The tip is that the match will be played at the SCG. It promises to be a classic grudge match.
16 July: JUDICIARY NOT INTERESTED IN SAINTS THIS WEEK
This week, Saints had 3 more players potentially facing the judiciary. Barrett and Bartrim were placed on report and Smith was penalised for a head high. There was no way that any of these players were guilty of anything other than playing hard footy but on previous experience it looked as if Saints were once again destined for punishment. In something of a surprise for Saints fans, neither Trent Barrett, Craig Smith or Wayne Bartrim were cited to face the judiciary. All are available for next weekend (!)
13 July: Australia have defeated NZ by 28-10 in convincing fashion. Nathan Blacklock did not play but is one step closer to representative honours with a pic of him wearing a Green & Gold jumper in the team photo. Newcastle's Andrews Johns was the star of the match playing just his 2nd game after 11 weeks on the sideline. Dragons five eighth, Trent Barrett wasn't far behind and set up numerous scoring opportunities as well as snaring a try for himself. On the losing side, Saints' prop forward, Craig Smith played with valour. Both players backed up brilliantly for the following day's match against the Eagles.

10 July: ANTHONY MUNDINE WINS IN CANADA
Wearing red and white trunks, Anthony Mundine has completely out-classed Kevin Pompey in Canada to with by TKO in 3 rounds. 'Choc' was originally billed to fight Alex Hilton but Hilton pulled out 2 weeks ago. Mundine was forced to find another opponent at late notice. SOTV Mundine page
10 July: 29 year old, Ex-Steeler John Simon has announced his retitement from  League. The Wests Tigers half back says he no longer enjoys playing and has lost the desire to compete. Simon played an important part in the Wollongong district during Illawarra's development. In total, he played 230 game at 1st grade and rep level and represented NSW and Australia (Super League) in his 10 year career.
09 July: TINGHA PACKS HIS BAGS FOR NZ
Just when we thought Nathan Blacklock was yet again snubbed by the selectors, we hear today that an ankle injury to 1st reserve Daniel Wagon has opened the door for Tingha who has been told to join the Kangaroos in New Zealand. Although he has only been selected as a reserve, this is great news as it appears at last that the world's best winger has finally managed to get a toe in the door of the selection room. Well done Nathan! Here's hoping you get a run!
09 July: The South Sydney Rabbitohs re-admission into the NRL for 2002 is now a mere formality following the annoucement from boss David Moffett that they have a 100% chance of being successful with their application.
Last Friday (6 July), Souths won their appeal in the High Court and this paved the way for one of Rugby League's foundation clubs to be playing again next year. Souths have a history which dates back to 1908 and have won 20 premierships, more than any other club. The Dragons are 2nd with 15 premierships.
Souths were booted out of the NRL for seasons 2000 and 2001 amidst uproar that the NRL had abandoned the traditions of the game in the name of pragmatism.
Souths boss and ex-player, George Piggins always maintained that Souths would stand alone and refused to consider mergers or re-locations. It is the opinion of many, including this writer, that Rugby League has suffered without Souths and their re-emergence in 2002 will be a major boost for the game.

05 July: Saints have re-signed Lee Hookey and Chris Leikvoll for a further 2 years each. They join Mark Gasnier who also recently signed a 2 year deal.
01 July: Queensland have hammered NSW 40-14 in the deciding SOO match to take out the 2001 series. NSW forwards were woeful while Qld skipper, Darren Lockyer and recalled half back, Allan Langer cut the NSW defence to ribbons. Veteran winger, Jamie Ainscough played well in a losing side in what was his final match for NSW. Well done Jamie.
29 June: Craig Smith today confirmed he would leave the Dragons at the end of the season. Smith said he was happy with the Dragons' original offer to re-sign him but rejected a revised offer from the club which was put forward after Smith copped a six-week suspension for a careless high tackle last month.
It is believed the new offer effectively halved his wage, with Smith to make up the shortfall in incentive payments if he remained suspension free. From News Interactive
29 June: In response to recent rumours of a Saints - Cronulla merger, Dragons management have released the following statement:
A STATEMENT FROM DRAGONS C.E.O PETER DOUST
St George Illawarra Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust today made the following statement in relation to recent unfounded rumours.
"I continue to be amazed about the rumour mill that exists within the game of rugby league. It starts here, it moves there and who knows where it finishes.
The St George Illawarra Dragons are 100% committed to our five-year business plan with the National Rugby League. We remain fully committed to the St George and Illawarra regions and have not, and will not, consider a variation to this commitment.
The game of rugby league has been through considerable change in recent times and I believe that the major priority is stability and confidence for the Club and it’s supporters," said Doust.
Mr Brian Johnston, a Director of St George Leagues Club and St George Football Club, a shareholder (sic) in the joint venture, has been linked to these unfounded rumours but has stated that he would have nothing to do with such a venture.
27 June: Mail on teams for the Canberra match: Canberra players Jason Croker, Mark McLinden and Ken Nagas are all reported as being out of the upcomimg match for July 7th. Croker and McLinden are out for the season.
The Saints camp reports no lasting injuries from last weekend despite Trent Barrett having to leave the field with a suspect torn calf muscle and Mark Gasnier being knocked out of the match following a deliberate head high fro NZ's Jerry Seu Seu (judiciary gave Seu Seu 1 week suspension). we have to wait and see how Barrett and Jamie Ainscough pull up after this weekend's State Of Origin III.
Definitely available is front rower, Craig Smith who is returning to the Canberra match following six weeks suspension. poste script: Barrett unavailble for SOO due the leg injury
26 June: According to a recent poll, the St George Illawarra Dragons are the most popular football team in NSW with 563,000 supporters. Overall, Saints came in 3rd behind Brisbane and Melbourne as the most widely supported club in Australia. The Morgan Poll surveyed about 18,800 between July 2000 and March 2001.
26 June: It has been reported that the Saints v Canberra match will in fact be the 10,000th game of 1st grade Rugby League. The Dragons have a history of featuring in special matches. The first ever drawn Grand Final, the first ever 1st grade match in Adelaide and the first ever RL match under lights are just  a few examples for trivia buffs.
25 June: Backrower, Andrew Hart has reportedly been given permission to negotiate with other clubs. Rumour has it that the Bulldogs are interesting in signing Hart for 2002.
24 June: Nathan Blacklock scored 2 tries today in the Saints v NZ match to take his 2001 tally to 20 tries. Apart from from being the competition's leading try scorer for 2001, Tingha also created history when he became the only 1st grade player ever to score 20 tries or more for 4 seasons in a row. Congrats Tingha. Well done... very well done!
For trivia buffs: Nathan Blacklock has scored 90 career tries, 89 of them for the Dragons in a little over 90 matches. He has scored 20 tries in 2001 from 17 matches.
Nathan Blacklock from SOTV vs NZ
There are still 9 rounds to go before the semis.
The most tries scored in one season by a Saints player is 26 by Tommy Ryan in 1957.
Most tries by a Saints player in one match is held by Jack Lindwall with 6 tries in 1947 (vs Manly).
Saints top try scorer is Johnny King (played 1960 - 1971) with 143 tries from 195 games.
By our reckoning, Tingha has the goods to take all these records, starting with Tommy Ryan's this year.
24 June: Both the NSW and Qld teams have been selected for the series deciding, SOO III to be played at ANZ Stadium in Brisbane on July 1st. Jamie Ainscough has once again retained his wing position while SOO II 'man of the match', Trent Barrett has been named at half back. At the time of writing, Barrett was under an injury cloud following a leg injury in the Saints v NZ match last weekend.
The big surprise in the Qld team is the re-calling of 35 year old half back legend, Alan Langer.

20 June: Craig Smith says he has been left with no option but to leave the Dragons at the end of this year.
Last night, he rejected St George Illawarra management's incentive-based contract offer.
Currently Smith is on about $300K per year and it's understandable why he would reject such an offer but on the other hand, he has spent little time on the field following suspensions and it's clear that the next suspension will be a lengthy one. Therefore, it's understandable why the club sees him as a liability. Smith has had some attractive offers from the UK but the possibly is there that he may be playing against the Dragons next year.
One of the world's best front rowers makes a return to Saints in round 18 against the Raiders. One question remains, will Smith retain the captaincy?

19 June: Andrew Hart has been dropped from the 1st grade team to take on NZ next Sunday. Inconsistent form and a poor showing in the Melbourne match were enough for coach Andrew Farrar to lower the axe on the Dragons back rower. A couple of other 1st graders can count themselves fortunate that they are not joining Hart in the lower grade this weekend.
In other team news, Keiran Kerr has been selected to replace the injured Willie Peters in what will the young half back's 1st grade debut.
18 June: Anthony Mundine has defended his Pan Asia title after punishing New Zealander Mike Makata at the Whitlam Recreation Centre in Sydney's west (Liverpool) tonight. Makata's team threw in the towel in the 5th round. Mundine is now tipped to meet Canada's Alex Hilton on July 10th in what will be Choc's first fight outside of Australia.
After the fight, Mundine announced once again that he is after the world title.

18 June: Post match news says that Willie Peters has an injured shoulder following a heavy tackle in the 69th min of the Saints v Melb match. He is set to undergo tests & we'll know more within the next day or two. First indications are that Willie may be out for the upcoming match against the Warriors.
Poste script (19 June): Willie Peters has been ruled out for 2 - 4 weeks with a grade two damage to his right AC joint. The 22 year old said he could not remember much of the incident when he was run down from behind by Melbourne winger, Marcus Bai. Willie is certain to miss the upcoming match against NZ but may be be back for the Canberra match with State of Origin III intervening between club games.
17 June: Speedy utility back, Matt Cooper has signed on with the Dragons for another 2 years.
15 June: NSWRL General Manager, Chris Turner has announced the NSW residents team which will take on the Qld residents in the curtain raiser to SOO III on July 1st:
1. Peter Boon (Dubbo Macquarie), 2. Brett Ridley (Thirroul), 3. Chad Halliday (Parramatta),

15 June: NATHAN BLACKLOCK 'LIKELY' TO REPRESENT AUSTRALIA
The Daily Telegraph reported today the 'news' that has already been circulating for weeks now that Nathan Blacklock will represent Australia before he plays for his state. The report, which took up the entire back page of the paper as well as the best part of an inside page, quotes Australia coach, Chris Anderson as saying that Blacklock is a '"very good chance" of being on the touring team at the end of the year.
14 June: Rumours persist that Saints are a chance of signing Cronulla 2nd rower, Nathan Long for season 2002. Another rumour doing the rounds is that huge ex Brisbane forward and current RU convert, Brad Thorn is available and is also being targetted by Saints' management.
14 June: It has been confirmed that Jamie Ainscough will be joining Wigan in 2002. Club officials at St George Illawarra have agreed to release Jamie from his contract which originally concluded next year.
10 June: NSW have delivered a heavy defeat to Qld at Stadium Australia to the tune of 26-8. The match was controlled by the half combination of Brad Fittler and Trent Barrett. Try scorer Barrett was named man of the match. Jamie Ainscough put in a sterling effort scoring a try and riding well on the back of a dominant NSW forward charge. The series is now squared at 1 game each with the decider to be played at ANZ, Brisbane on July 1st.

08 June: Country have been comprehensive in their defeat of City running out winners by 42-10. Nathan Blacklock didn't dissappoint the Bathurst crowd with a try right on fulltime.
04 June: Latest news is that an injured Robbie Kearns is out of the NSW team and Jason Ryles is set to be promoted into the State team. This soon changes when Jason Stevens is declared fit and goes into the NSW front row. Jason Ryles still has a City jersey.
04 June: Craig Gower has re-signed with the Panthers for 4 years ending speculation that he may be signing with the Dragons, The Roosters, Canterbury or the Eels for 2002.
03 June: CITY, COUNTRY ORIGIN SELECTED. Venue: Carrington Park, Bathurst on Friday night.
The Dragons are well represented in both City & Country Origin with no surprises regarding most however special mention must be given to Colin Ward who has been selected in the City side ahead of a number of other contenders. Wardy was written off last year when injury seemed to have claimed his career but he came back with strong performances for Saints and his selection for City is just reward.
Also,  Lance Thompson has been honoured with the captaincy of the City side.

03 June:
NSW SELECTORS & COACH ARE A DISGRACE
SACK THE LOT OF THEM!
Following Nathan Blacklock's omission from the NSW team, I felt it necessary to wait for a day. The outrage felt would not lend itself well to a rational report.
Well, here it is a day later and the outrage had turned into disgust.
Last night's news which shows a humble champion winger sitting despondently on foyer steps best illustrates NSW Rugby League's day of shame. The selectors have made a major error and we will not support their narrow view of what makes a footballer.
Nathan Blacklock courtesy Daily Telegraph 4 June 2001
Lets name names:
Wayne Pearce (coach & selector), Bob McCarthy (chairman & selector), Bob Fulton (selector), Frank Fish (selector) and Geoff Gerard (selector).
For those who think there are a few Rugby League legends amongst that line up, think again.
What we have here are a bunch of yesterday's heroes who have lost touch with the basics of the game and wouldn't know real talent if it ran over the top of them. Tingha is the stand out attacking player of the competition
and yet these self proclaimed 'selectors' are playing politics with a player's career. Their petty prejudices have now become abundantly apparent.
Nathan Blacklock's 2nd hat trick of 2001 and the winning try at Leichhardt was a great Rugby League moment. But there is little acknowledgment or reward for the achievements of Australia's and the world's best winger in over a generation. Incredibly, the selectors feel they
Nathan Blacklock's record 1999: Top try scorer in comp
2000: Top try scorer in comp
2001 (so far):
17 tries after 15 rounds
(2nd place has 12 tries)
So far: 87 tries since 1998
know best against the overwhelming evidence and the overwhelming weight of well informed opinion.
According to some reports, Tingha is hurting. So much so that he may quit League in favour of Union. I don't blame him but we hope this doesn't happen. There's every chance that Tingha may be wearing a Green & Gold jersey later this year as it appears only injury to another player will see him in a Blue's jersey.Whatever the future holds, there is no doubt that Nathan Blacklock is a true champion both on and off the field and that is something that Pearce, McCarthy and Co. can never take away. Hang in there Tingha, we know you deserve better!

03 June: NSW & QLD SELECTED
The NSW selectors have once again overlooked Nathan Blacklock for State selection. This is despite Tingha's wonderful form of late which sees him far and above any other try scorer in the the current NRL competition. It appears that Blacklock's only chance for selection is if Adam MacDougall is unable to pass fitness tests - this is still on the cards. Jason Ryles has also been overlooked but will no doubt have his chances at a future time. Jamie Ainscough has retained his wing spot and Trent Barrett has been named in the starting line up at half back at the expense of Eagles' halfback, Brett Kimmorley. Radical surgery 'saves' Timmins - newspaper report from Sunday Telegraph
The career of St George Illawarra international Shaun Timmins has been saved following revolutionary surgery. Timmins successfully underwent a procedure to correct a rare bone degeneration in his left knee that had prompted fears he may never play again.
The 24-year-old is the first professional athlete in Australia to have had such surgery, known as an osteochondaral transplant, and he has already set his sights on off-season training in November.
The hard-running centre has not played since turning out for NSW in State of Origin II on May 24 last year.
"I'm really happy," Timmins said.
"It was very frustrating before the operation. I was waiting around for so long to see what they could do for me.
"Now I'm hoping to be fully fit for off-season training at the start of November."
The ailment had left Timmins with an ulcer-type hole in a weight-bearing part of his left knee. This resulted in excruciating pain every time he ran.
After a failed operation in February, Dragons doctor Martin Raftery scoured the world of sports medicine in an attempt to find a cure.
Eventually, Sydney orthopaedic surgeon Dr Allan Turnbull was found to be just as experienced in treating the condition as anyone overseas.
During the operation last week a "plug" of bone was taken from a non-weight-bearing part of Timmins' affected knee. This was then placed into the hole left by the disease.
"This (operation) was a big question mark -- no other athlete at the highest level had undergone this," Dr Raftery said.
"But it's been very successful. Now he's got eight weeks off walking and we'll slowly rehabilitate him over six months.
"Firstly, we've got to basically `hog-tie' him for the first three months because we've got to keep him quiet to help with the recovery."
In a sign of St George Illawarra's confidence in Timmins' ability to recover, the club will meet his manager George Mimis tomorrow to commence talks on re-signing him for 2002 and beyond.
From the Sunday Telegraph

02 June: Saints boast a number of contenders for selection in the upcoming State of Origin II & III matches as well as the City & Country origin matches. Trent Barrett and Jamie Ainscough who look likely to retain spots in the NSW team. In addition, Nathan Blacklock has at last gained consideration
for the NSW wing spot but only if injury to existing players permit. If not, Blacklock is a near certainty for Country Origin. Jason Ryles chances for NSW selection get better every week. Lance Thompson (pic right) has also been touted as a possible NSW rep. Also we have Mark Gasnier who may miss out on NSW selection but looks odds on to be be selected for City Origin as will half back Willie Peters. Another contender for City is Mark Riddell. In total, that's eight possibles out of a squad of 17.
Lance Thompson courtesy NRL site
29 May: Trent Barrett is suspended for one match following a guilty plea for a careless head high tackle last Friday night. He will be available for SOO II where he has been tipped to be selected at half back at the expense of Brett Kimmorley.
25 May: News to hand is that there is a new addition to the Ainscough household with mum and boy doing well. Congratulations!
25 May: Hooker, Mark Riddell has signed for a further 3 years to remain with the Dragons. Signed for this year from the Roosters, Riddell's 'power' running style from dummy half and distinctive 'heil' kicking style have made him a favourite with the fans. Also tipped to re-sign soon is Mark Gasnier.
23 May: Jason Ryles set for NSW Origin Selection
Following a series of strong performances, Saints prop Jason Ryles (age 22) is set for selection in the State Of Origin NSW squad. The inclusion of Ryles is seen as an opportunity for the Blues to regain some of the up front authority which was lacking the 34-16 loss to Queensland on May 6th. S.O.O. II will be played on June 10th.

17 May: Saints officials have apparently given Jamie Ainscough permission to negotiate with other clubs for 2002. Reports state that Jamie feels the time is right at this stage of his career to make the move to a UK club, tipped to be Wigan or Hull.
17 May: In a shock move, Ben Jeffries has left the Dragons mid season and will be playing for Wests 1st Division on Sunday against Newtown. Jeffries was signed at the end of 1999 from Newcastle Jersey Flegg and has since had limited opportunity in the Saints' top grade. Wests Tigers are looking for a replacement for half back,  Craig Field who is currently under a lengthy suspension following his positive drug test earlier this year.
16 May: Craig Smith has been given a 6 week suspension by the NRL judiciary following a head high tackle on Rooster's Matt Sing in last Sunday's match. This latest suspension may spell the end of Smith's career in Australia although Smith has indicated a preference to remaining with Saints. The Dragons captain has been offered lucrative 2002 contracts from the UK.
Craig Smith pleaded guilty to the head high but contested the grade 4 rating. The suspension will see him miss the next five Dragons matches as well as one NZ Test (v France) in June. Smith has acknowledged the full support he has recieved from the club following an impressive defence headed by prominent QC, Bernie Gross.
15 May: Saints have named the Dragon's most experienced current player,  Colin Ward as replacement for the suspended Craig Smith. The captain for Sunday's clash with the Bulldogs will be Lance Thompson with Trent Barrett having input.
15 May: St George Illawarra's home ground at Wollongong plans to recycle Olympic seating to build a 5,500-seat northern grandstand at WIN Stadium.
The Wollongong Sportsground Trust has lodged a development application with Wollongong City Council to construct the grandstand by using a structure which was part of the Olympic overlay from the Sydney International Aquatic Centre.
The extra seats would bring the ground capacity to 20,000 which meets National Rugby League and National Soccer League criteria.
The project is expected to cost $8 million, create 85 jobs and use 400 tonnes of steel and 400 cubic metres of concrete.
The northern grandstand would have three food and beverage outlets, additional toilets and would accommodate more than 60 wheelchairs. From the NRL site.
15 May: Craig Smith is likely to get 5 weeks or more on the sideline following his head high tackle on Matt Sing in last weekend's match against the Roosters. Some obsevers felt that Smith was lucky not be sent off while others say the tackle was at worse 'careless'. Either way Saints will have to get used to be being without their captain again who is now facing his 3rd suspension for 2001. The match against the Roosters was his first back following a previous suspension.
11 May: Big prop, Jason Ryles & centre, Mark Gasnier are tipped as outside chances for NSW selection for State of Origin II on June 10th. Jason's big frame and determined running style has gained the attention of the selectors while Gasnier was mentioned by selector chairman & ex-Souths legend  Bob McCarthy as his next choice after Michael Devere who got the nod in SOO I due his goal kicking abilities. Although state selection would be a huge bonus for Saints fans, it appears more likely that the 2 young stars will gain Country & City selection next month when teams for that contest are announced.
10 May: Senior players Jamie Ainscough, Wayne Bartrim & Darren Treacy are all set to sign with UK clubs for 2002. Ainscough & Treacy are rumoured to be going to Hull while Barto is apparently looking at his options. This would see Saints lose 3 of their most experienced players & would signal a changing of the guard.
9 May: Willie Peters is set for rep honours when the City Origin side is chosen next month. The Illawarra Mercury reports that  Willie can be confident of a spot due to the lack of other options for City selectors. from Jubilee Avenue
Willie Peters captured by SOTV in 2000 ESL Grand Final
8 May: Rumours persist that Craig Gower may be a Dragon in 2001. Latest word is that both Canterbury and Saints have made offers to the Penrith hooker although Parramatta are also in the running. Worth approximately $500,000 per year, it is understood that Penrith can no longer afford the outstanding Test player who prefers to play at halfback. The rumour mill has Gower playing at half with Saints next year with Willie Peters taking a back seat. Info as it comes to hand...
8 May: Paul McGregor and Matt Cooper are tipped to make a return to the Dragon's lineup in Sunday's match against the Roosters. If selected, this will be Matt Cooper's first game for 2001after injuring his shoulder. Paul McGregor has only played twice in 2001after suffering a knee injury earlier in the season.
6 May: Qld have had a comprehensive victory over NSW by 34-16 at Suncorp Stadium (Lang Park). Dragons' Jamie Ainscough played well on his wing, saving tries and putting in some excellent displays of defence as he often found himself out - numbered. 5/8, Trent Barrett sat most of the match on the bench and was forced to watch NSW put in an oridinary kicking game for 60 mins before he finally got a run. Once on, Barrett set up many plays and scored a try. Qld were just too keen and a number of NSW playerss were found to be wanting in defence as Tallis and Lockyer & Co. ripped through the disorganised NSW forward pack.
29 Apr: NSW STATE OF ORIGIN TEAM ANNOUNCEDThe NSW team is: Mark Hughes, Adam MacDougall, Matt Gidley, Mick De Vere, Jamie Ainscough, Brad Fittler, Brett Kimmorley, Jason Stevens, Luke Priddis, Robbie Kearns, Nathan Hindmarsh, Bryan Fletcher, Jason Croker.Interchange: Trent Barrett, Ben Kennedy, Rodney Howe, Michael Vella.
Coach Wayne Pierce
As expected, the selectors have once again overlooked the League's most consistent winger, Nathan Blacklock SOTV Blacklock editorial - see below
Congratulations to Jamie Ainscough and Trent Barrett on gaining a Blues jumper.

27 Apr: Media reports have quoted Craig Smith as saying that he will quit Australia should he get a 3rd suspension this season for his running style. This follows a meeting between Saints and the NRL last Thursday where the Dragons pointed out inconsistencies in the the recent judiciary rulings. Smith is currently on a 2 week suspension. He has already been offered contracts by 2 English clubs and has stated that he wants to stay with the Dragons. However, if he is suspended a third time for the same offence, we may see him departing for the UK.

26 April 2001:
Selectors please take note:
NATHAN 'TINGHA' BLACKLOCK MUST GAIN SELECTION
On Sunday night, the selectors are set to pick the NSW State of Origin team. Many of the positions are already decided and one could be excused for thinking that the wingers are amongst those positions. But in recent weeks, the media has been pushing hard for the inconsistent Colin Best and Anthony Minichiello.
On last Thursday's Footy Show, Nathan Blacklock didn't even rate a mention and the same was the case in a recent Telegraph article by Peter Frillingos. In fact, the media in general has all but ignored Nathan Blacklock as a contender for the available wing spot.
I always thought that consistency was the main criteria the selectors looked for when making their decision. Blacklock  has scored more tries than anyone else (78 from the last 90 games), he was winger of the year in 2000, he has topped the try scoring list for 2 years running and is the only player in history to score more than 20 tries per season for 3 seasons running.  How much more consistent can Tingha be?
Defensively, Nathan has saved countless tries and often bundles his opposite into touch. He has just turned 24 which is a perfect age for a representative winger. Also, he hasn't missed a game for the best part of 3 seasons.
When Nathan was overlooked by the selectors for last year's SOO & World Cup, he took it on the chin. He didn't complain and commented that he would just have to try harder. In other words, he is a professional.
It now appears that a strong media campaign has all but extinguished Nathan's chances for higher honours.
In my view, if Nathan Blacklock misses out on selection for the Blues on Sunday night, then the credibility of the NRL will come under serious question. I for one will be asking why and others will be pointing the finger squarely at the old boys who seem to have a problem with giving due credit to an outstanding Rugby League player who just happens to be from a background which differs from their own.
Nathan Blacklock

26 Apr: SAINTS LOSE HOOPER FOR 8 WEEKS
Thursday, 26 April 2001: Jason Hooper has withdrawn from Saturday's important match against Newcastle following an accident with a power tool in his home on Tuesday night.
This is a massive blow for the Dragons who have had a lousy run of luck in recent times with injuries and suspensions. Hooper, one of Saints' best players this year was set to fill in for 5/8 Trent Barrett who was suspended recently in controversial circumstances.
During a home renovation, Hooper sliced into his fingers with a band saw or something of the like and was rushed to hospital. He had suffered a slightly severed finger and some tendon damage and underwent surgery. He will be out for 8 weeks.
Coach, Andrew Farrar has yet to name a replacement.
25 Apr: Jason Hooper sustained an injury while using a power tool at his home last night. Apart from a partial severing of the finger, he also has tendon damage and underwent surgery. Medical staff are confident the operation has been a success. Hooper may be out for many weeks.
23 Apr: FARRAR TO COACH DRAGONS UNTIL 2003
The Dragons have today announced that coach Andrew Farrar has agreed terms to coach the club for a further two seasons, which will see him contracted as head coach until the end of the 2003 NRL season.
Max Ninness, the Dragons assistant coach, who has also agreed to commit to the club for a further 2 years.
20 Apr: Any player who lifts his knees and goes unpunished this weekend is likely to end up featuring in a video dossier which St George Illawarra will take to an emergency summit with the National Rugby League next Thursday.
The Dragons club is set to challenge the entire concept of "contrary conduct" after skipper Craig Smith was one of three Dragons suspended this week.
"The club has already looked at a number of similar incidents in which no action was taken," former Dragons co-captain and current trainerNathan Brown said last night. NRL chief executive David Moffett confirmed last night he had an appointment with StGeorge Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust and coach Andrew Farrar next Thursday to thrash out the club's problems with the judicial system.
Farrar is opposed to clubs citing players and said if a compilation tape of other players lifting their knees was used, it would be solely to support the club's argument, and not to dob in opponents.
There are fears the two-week suspension meted out to Smith will encourage him to accept an offer from Britain at the end of this season. The Dragons still hope to re-sign him next week.
Moffett said it would be "disappointing" if the Dragons compiled a video compilation of alleged foul play but would not comment further until after Thursday's meeting. From Steve Mascord of the Sydney Morning Herald
In the meantime, match review committee head and judiciary commissioner, Jim Hall has dismissed the Dragon's allegations of bias as 'a load of rubbish'.
SOTV note: Craig Smith and his manager will wait until Sunday the 29th April before deciding on whether to accept an offer from England to escape the match review committee's ongoing scrutiny over his running style.
WHAT A DISGRACE!
18 April 2001: The NRL judiciary has nailed the door shut on natural justice today when Trent Barrett, Wayne Bartrim and Craig Smith all received suspensions.
The rulings effectively leave Saints and their supporters without argubly the game's best 5/8; their most experienced forward; and their captain - said by some to be the best forward in the world.
Trent Barrett was forced to plead guilty to head slamming despite his innocence. A guilty plea sees Saints without Barrett for just 2 weeks instead of the 3 weeks if he chose to defend himself.
Wayne Bartrim also pleaded guilty despite being innocent and has been sidelined for 1 week.
Craig Smith pleaded not guilty and contested the charge that he has deliberately raised his knee into a tackler. He was suspended and will be out for 2 weeks.
Apart from the obvious discrimination, there is also the question of player's being forced to plead guilty. The punishment for entering a 'not guilty' plea is extra weeks on the sideline. It's common knowledge that no man is found innocent once he has the audacity to take on the NRL judiciary system.
What sort of justice is this?
Trent Barrett, accused of head slamming also had a defence. Even his 'victim', Parramatta's Brett Hodgson believed that Barrett should not have been charged.
Perhaps the absurd nature of the judiciary system was highlighted in Wayne Bartrim's case. Following an incident where he was being kicked and but did not kick back, Barto motioned his knee forward to protect himself. He was sent off by referee Sean Hampstead who did not have a clear view of the incident. The judiciary charge was that he 'attempted' a kick!
The targeting of Craig Smith is of particular concern and from the outside, it looks as if judiciary commissioner, Jim Hall, who is also the head of match review committee has launched a personal crusade against the Dragon's captain. Judiciary chairman, Justice Greg Woods directed the panel to consider the 'unusual' nature of the case. Woods was referring to an earlier head clash which left Smith with 20 stitches and disorientated. Woods maintained that Smith's actions were not against the spirit of the game and were not deliberate. But Hall dismissed this argument. Mal Cochrane, Royce Ayliffe and Ian Roberts sided with the commissioner and found Smith guilty.
We see dozens of of minor incidents every week and we hear nothing of it. Why is the judiciary coming out almost every week and citing Dragon's player?
What will it take before we see an overhaul of this petty and out-dated system.

Apr 17: Craig Smith (lifting knee) has joined Wayne Bartrim (kicking) and Trent Barrett (dangerous tackle) and will face the judiciary. Barrett risks a 3 match suspension if he challeges the charge or a 2 match suspension he pleads guilty in what has one of the most archaic judicial systems in the sporting world.
Dragons CEO, Peter Doust has accused the NRL of trying to make an example of the Dragons. Doust fears that judiciary commissioner, Jim Hall could drive Craig Smith out of the game. He added that Trent Barrett has been unfairly targetted and commented that Wayne Bartrim,  rather than getting charged for an 'attempted kick', should be applauded for not retaliating.
Apr 16: Anthony Mundine has knocked out Kiwi, Timo Masua in the 3rd round at the Cararra Sports Stadium on the Gold Coast to take the Pan Asia Boxing Association super-middleweight title. Mundine's record is 6 wins; 4 by TKO, one by KO. The win gives Mundine a world ranking and a possible shot at a world title.

Apr 13: 22-year-old prop, Jason Ryles has signed a 3 year contract & will remain as a Dragon until the end of 2004, club chief executive Peter Doust said today.
Jason was coming off contract this year and it's great news that we'll be keeping him. His powerful tackle busting runs has been a trademark of his play.
Other players who have been re-signed since last season include Trent Barrett, Amos Roberts, Nathan Blacklock, Luke Bailey, Lance Thompson & Jason Hooper.
Apr 9: Saints have been allowed to keep their 2 competition points following the NRL's blaming of Ref Bill Harrigan. This has to be a first!
Harrigan sin binned Jason Hooper in the 21st minute of the round 8 Penrith match but allowed play to continue before Hooper could leave the field. Hooper got involved in a tackle but did not prevent a Penrith try. NRL investigation found that Harrigan had erred by not stopping play. Once sin binned, it is the ref's responsibilty to clear the player from the field before play can continue.
Apr 9: Mark Riddell appears to be OK & will may play next weekend. The mighty Saints hooker was injured in a tackle last weekend and was stretchered off with a precautionary neck brace in place. Although selected to play against the Eels on Saturday, he is considered as being in doubt.
Apr 6: Prop forward, Craig Smith, 29 will be playing his 100th first grade game when he runs onto the field against Penrith on Sunday.
Apr 2: Melbourne coach, Chris Anderson has quit the Storm. The announcement was made early on Monday evening. Anderson has been in turmoil with Storm management for months now and was apparently given the option to quit or be sacked. He has been replaced by caretaker coach, Mark Murray.
Considered petty by many, Anderson has few friends in Dragon territory following his prompting of the juciary to scrutinise the running action of Craig Smith (see March 6).
Apr 1: Rumours that Craig Smith has a broken jaw appear to be exaggerated. Smith was knocked out in Sundays win over the Cowboys after he was struck on the chin by a rising elbow from NQ forward, Nick Paterson. Paterson later escaped suspension after pleading guilty to a grade one striking charge - his previous clean record saving him from being sidelined.
Apr 1: Wests Tigers player, John Hopoate has resigned from the Tigers just prior to a Tigers' club board meeting. This ends a week of controversy for John Hopoate who was found guilty of sticking his fingers into opposition player's back sides. Having disgraced himself, John Hopoate was suspended for 12 weeks but opted to resign rather than face the further humiliation of being sacked.
Mar 30: Rumour is that there is no chance that Saints will be signing Jamie Goddard. All indications are that club officials will be spending more on nurturing the talent which is already in the club. Earlier this month, Jamie Goddard from the Northern Eagles was touted as a possible new signing to replace Nathan Brown.
Mar 30: Craig Smith has denied any move St Helens for 2002. Although there has been some interest from other overseas clubs, Craig Smith has expressed his desire to stay with the Dragons for at least 2 more years. From Jubilee Avenue.
Mar 27: The possible signing of Jamie Goddard from Northern Eagles is now up in the air following an oustanding performance by Mark Riddell in Friday night's match (23Mar). Riddell made it very clear that he the best man in the club to replace the retired hooker,  Nathan Brown. Goddard played in 1st division for the Eagles and was outplayed by Saints' 1st Division hooker, Aaron Gorrell who was returning from injury. Goddard's release from the Eagles is expected today.
Mar 27: In other 'good' news, there is no news regarding injuries and/or suspensions this week with all players coming out of last Friday's match unscathed. Jason Ryles, Wayne Bartrim and Daniel Heckenberg all make their return this week but Trent Barrett is still in doubt and will probably miss the NQ clash.
Mar 26: Rumours surfacing that Craig Smith  has been offered a huge contract to play in the English Super League, possibly with Hull or St Helens, in 2002.
Mar 23: Newspaper & TV reports have carried news of 'surprise and bewilderment' at the decision by National Rugby League judiciary commissioner Jim Hall to suspend Dragon's forward, Jason Ryles for one week. The recipient of Ryle's tackl
