I published this letter below within 2 hours of full time.
I looked at it the next day and thought, 'Crikey! How angry is this!'
I decided that it was bit over the top and was missing the point that we still had a great year.
Sure, I still reckon that Saints won 60 minutes of the match and the ref won the final 20. Nevertheless, I decided to have the letter pulled down.
I have since received a number of emails wanting to know why I took it off and asking for another look at the letter.
So here it is, a letter to the NRL.
Shots fired in anger.
A Letter to the NRL
This is the worst day of my life! At half time we were 14 nil up and super confident. Melb got back in the match, I can accept that. They are a good team, they deserve to come back. But I can't accept a Melb try off a forward pass. No vid ref for that forward pass! The Saints try copped heaps of scrutiny early in the 2nd half when they scored. Then there was the bloody penalty try! This decision is an out of the ordinary. Why did Whittacker insist on Harrigan being the ref.  Why were the StGeorge - Illawarra team reluctant to accept their losers medals? (as  just heard shortly after the match).
Why are the new League so keen on Melbourne?
We are shattered here.
We can't understand why the National Rugby League endorses such match fixing. Sue me if you like you bastards. But you robbed us ... I saw it coming but I didnt pick up on on it. Saints are still the best. Melbourne are merely an NRL lackey.
This is from someone who fully accepted the Manly win in 96. Even though Ref Manson stuffed up I still reckoned that the much hated Manly deserved to win.
But this is about 1999 and I reckon Melb will know well that they made a comeback thanks to the crap administration and shocking politics of the modern rugby league.
It is clear that you had the perfect Grand Final. The Merger vs the Franchise. But you got greedy didn't you?
The nod was given to the ref to favour Melbourne in the 2nd half if  given the opportunity.
I've played against good cheats in the past. But today, the 3 card trick was there for all to see.
You must think everyone is stupid.
You silly arseholes! You've just lost about a million RL supporters worldwide.
My son wants play soccer now. My 2nd son wants to give hockey a go.
Heck, stop counting the dollars and think about the spirit!
-Steve.

Since the match, Melbourne arrogance has been an embarrassment to the game.
They were disgusting before the match and they were even worse immediately after the match.
Not once have I heard from Melbourne that there was another team on the paddock that day.
To make matters worse, they have been backed up the Australian selectors.

I have been checking out some of the other websites which are far more level headed than ours.
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~dsmart/saints/seas1999.htm
has a season review with all the stats.
The site has published a disturbing fact which emerged from the GF:
Referee errors favoured Melbourne 12 - 0
I only have questions.
Why do convicted drug cheats gain selection ahead of honest players?
Why is it incredible that Melbourne 'kicked in' 20 minutes after half time?
How can a 1st grade referee make so many errors in favour of one team?

I am not surprised that NZ beat Aust in the so called 'Test' match. The News Ltd bastards even had the audacity to call them Kangaroos.
What a joke. The team was bloated with News Ltd TV stars doped up on PED and selected by corrupt and greedy bean counters.
I watched the match but the passion is gone. I didn't give a stuff about the result.
I am even less surprised by the shafting of South Sydney and the propping up of Super League teams.
Come 2001, we won't even be able to watch a TV game unless we pay for it.
I have no idea of how we can get our game back. I guess its over.

I have been seeing in some chat rooms that Saints supporters are being accused of being whingers! I guess we should expect this - how can Melbourne supporters even begin to understand. Afterall, our expectations were high - very high. The expectations of the Storm supporters was low. They already felt that their team had done enough. But to come away with a win (no matter what the circumstances) must have sent them into an frenzy - albeit an ignorant, blissful and fanciful one.
