| Chapter 7 The Fundamentals of Rugby League (Section 4)
the fundamentals of picking up and catching
the ball
Picking up and catching a ball applies as much to forwards
as it does to the backs - it is essential that each player in the team
is able to pick up and catch balls in a reliable way.
Picking up the Ball: Points to Consider:
-
Your eyes should be fixed on the ball at all times.
-
Gather the ball from the side - not head-on as it is awkward and you are
likely to become tangled up with your leg. As you approach the ball
slacken speed. When you are about 3 to 5 yards before the ball stoop
down with your inside leg behind the ball. Gather it with one hand underneath,
the other on top - this will steady the ball and make it easier to handle.
Use both hands.
-
Straighten up, keeping the ball in your hands ready to pass to one of your
team-mates if need be.
Catching the Ball from a Passing Movement - Points to Consider:
-
Your eyes should be on the ball as it comes to you.
-
Stretch out your arms and fingers from your body (again, eyes on the ball)
ready to receive.
-
Attempt if possible to position yourself deeply from the ball carrier so
that you can really clap on speed once you receive it. (Of course
if the passer is faster than you don't slow him up by "calling him back".)
-
If you are a forward or inside back try to develop the habit of passing
and catching in the one movement.
Ready to receive a pass.
"In the Air"
-
Concentrate on the ball as it comes through the air. Don't look at
the defenders as this will upset your concentration.
-
Always try to get underneath the ball or near to where it is going to drop.
At all times attempt to take the ball on the full, not letting it bounce.
-
Arms should be well out from the body, in the air with fingers apart, searching
for the ball. Take the ball by forming a cradle with your arms, as high
on the chest as possible. If you happen to fumble you have the chance
to recover the ball.
